people so tired
mutilated
either by love or no love

people are just no good to each other
one on one

the rich are not good to the rich
the poor are not good to the poor

we are afraid

our educational system tells us
that we can all be
big-ass winners

it hasn't told us about
the gutters and
the suicides

or the terror of one person
aching in one place
alone

untouched
unspoken to

watering a plant

- Charles Bukowski

Maybe someone already said this..I haven't read the whole thread....

"What's wrong with me?
Why do I feel like this?
I'm going crazy now

On my life, on my head, don't wanna think about it
Feels like I'm going insane, yeah

It's a thief in the night to come and grab you
It can creep up inside you and consume you
A disease of the mind, it can control you
It's too close for comfort "

Disturbia by Rhianna

Reminds me of PTSD every time

"Yeah, It’s been a ride…
I guess i had to go to that place to get to this one
Now some of you might still be in that place
If you’re trying to get out, just follow me
I’ll get you there
....

I’m not afraid to take a stand
Everybody come take my hand
We’ll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just let you know that, you’re not alone
Holla if you feel like you’ve been down the same road..."

Not Afraid by Eminem

"I have accepted fear as a part of life -
specifically the fear of change... I have gone ahead despite
the pounding in the heart that says: turn back"

"Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer,
but wish we didn't"

Erica Jong

This is from Richard Dawkins' book "Unweaving the Rainbow" (Penguin Books, 2006, p. 1)

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here."

Every time I remember this, I am filled with awe and thankfulness: I am alive and tolerably healthy, I live in relative safety, my basic needs are fulfilled, I get to experience my life in all its richness (the good, the bad and the ugly), I get to grow and learn. Despite of all the struggle, I truly am lucky.

That's so deep, to deep almost. Like going to the mall without clothes on kinda of thing.

Can't live life that way though, its not so philosophic.

Hey Athena, love your posts. Great stuff.
Think maybe Erica Jong was being a bit tongue-in-cheek on that one. Thought her book "Fear of 50" was tops, really good stuff. OK - I'm overposting - gotta log off :-) Fun thread.

ok, darn it - one more then I'm outa here...this is to 'counterbalance' the Bukowski quote :-)

"You will not be punished for your anger, you will be punished by your anger"

"You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection"

"Three things cannot be long hidden, the sun, the moon, and the truth"

- Buddha

I just found this on a blog called 'Reports from a Resident Alien - This "Earth" place sure is weird.' It was published as recently as May 19, 2010 on livejournal dot com, and it comments on the Mad Pride movement.

"The way I see it, there’s very little you can do to a person that’s worse than denying them the right to manage their own treatment, to the extent they can understand the choices; or to deny them the ability to understand said choices (for example, deliberately not telling people what medications they are taking, or deliberately not telling them their diagnosis or what it means). This is because, when you disempower someone to that extent, you are taking their life out of their own hands; you are turning them into someone who cannot make their own decisions - forcibly making them dependent. And while this may make them an easier person to handle, it will forever deny them the ability to live a truly independent life - unless they break free and start making their own choices. That is what Mad Pride is trying to tell the professionals: We want to make our own decisions. We want to manage our own treatment. This is my life; I am my own person."

Athena

Amen. But for those who are currently not permitted to be part of the process of making decisions about their own care or their own life, how exactly do they "break free and start making their own choices?" This, after all, is precisely what is refused them by those with the power to decide.
