Really bizzare - hives

On my birthday (day after Christmas) I spiked a fever of 103, and developed hives all over. By the next morning, the fever and the hives were both gone. But since then, I've had hives coming and going. They itch terribly, and get fairly swollen. The odd thing is that they are only appearing on my joints or on scar tissue. I've never heard of an illness that could cause that. I have an appointment with my doctor on Monday morning, but until then I am left to speculate.

Ideas, anyone?

Autoimmune hands down. I am not a Dr. but I would be good money that it is autoimmune.

External text from pdf file:
Compared to veterans with no mental health issues, those diagnosed with PTSD had significantly greater
risk for subsequent diagnosis with autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory
bowel disease, multiple sclerosis and lupus. The same study also found that women had a higher risk for
developing autoimmune disorders than men, and that a diagnosis of PTSD further increased this risk.

Where on your body are they? You said joints but upper, lower body?
Did you take any medication that might have caused a drug reaction?
Has anything helped? Oatmeal bath, hydrocortisone cream, Zyrtec?

@Fadeaway I had the same thought about it being autoimmune. I have stage 4 endometriosis, which is a big indicator for possible autoimmune issues.

@TreeHugger I had a tick bite on Thanksgiving. I was tested at two weeks and again at six weeks for tick-borne illnesses, and the tests came back clear.

@Runlola72 Where on my body... ankles, toes, knees elbows, wrists, fingers. The scars impacted are on my lower legs, except for the donor site from my skin graft, which is on my thigh and is 3 x 9 inches of superficial scar tissue. The hives there swell up bigger than elsewhere, and itch a lot more, too. I've scratched myself raw in my sleep.

Taking a super hot bath helps with the itching. I take benadryl, but I'm not sure it's doing any good. I don't think it's a drug reaction - I haven't started anything new.

If you take depakote, go to the ER. Even if you've been on it for years. It's a quasi-rare but well known side effect, and it's lethal if ignored & needs immediate screening &/or treatment. It's a warning sign of impending encephalopathy &/or liver failure. It's less that the rash tends to appear at joints, and more that it tends to appear on delicate & thin tissue especially near veins/pulse points, although it can appear anywhere. Usually Depakote folks are warned to get any rash screened same day, but it tends to take a few days to a few weeks before things get dangerous. I know. Very bluebird of happiness, me. :wtf: Anyhow, cheers to hoping you aren't on Depakote, and this has just been a test of the heart in the throat, f*ck you anxiety, broadcast system.

Nothing else I can think of is really urgent. Dozens of maybes. Glad you're seeing your doc soon, regardless :)

Oh. As always? Any time you're nervous about possible medical condition, call the nurse-advice line through your local hospital, yeah? I mean, we all sit around cafés talking maladies with mates over coffee ... But nothing but nothing even comes close to real medical advice, amirite?

I know a woman that is in her 80's and 2 yrs ago developed hives. It drove her batty, as she couldn't sleep and was digging her skin to shreds. Believe it or not, she is allergic to the sun... She has to be completely covered when out side. Long sleeves, pants, hat ect.....

If you have insurance, I suggest seeing a dermatologist....

Friday - no depakote for me. I was worried it was a lamotrigine rash (which can also be fatal) when it first started. I saw the nurse practitioner for outpatient psychiatry, and she said it wasn't from the lamotrigine and was nothing to worry about.

Oh yes - all our speculation is no substitute for sound medical advice. Mostly, I want input so I can come up with better questions to ask when I see my doc Monday morning. He's very smart, but things go easier if I have specific questions.

Well, I live in Wisconsin. No sunshine for me. I'd think laundry detergent was a possibility, but it's the same stuff we've used for years. I initially thought bed bugs (EW!) but there aren't ANY signs of them in our bed. Plus I develop new hives throughout the day, and they don't look anything like pictures of bed bug bites. Plus, why would bed bugs limit themselves to my joints or scar tissue?

Urticaria is just another word for hives. So yes, in that respect, it is indeed urticaria. I'll ask my doc if he thinks it could be caused by the cold weather. I am inside a perfectly warm house almost all the time, though, so I'm not sure it would really be affecting me.
