Overcoming

I'm struggling with the impulsive urge to self-harm and have self-harmed more than once in the past 24 hrs. I am a really introverted person and don't talk to people around me about the urges. There are people who are aware though. I'm just not good at talking about it, because it isn't easy for people who don't have a problem with it to understand, and I don't want to concern people too much.

Has anyone used a helpline? If so, where did you find it? I'm anxious and don't want to call the wrong number or anything. I also don't know if I can really work up the nerve to place the call, but I feel like I should try. Has it helped anyone else?

Im sorry for your struggle right now. Do you have a therapist you're working with? As far as a hotline, I haven't ever tried it myself. I will look for a number

I do have a therapist. I actually just began working with a new therapist this past week, so I haven't built much rapport with her yet. I'm not scheduled to see her again for a couple of weeks.

I encourage you to try calling, if you need to you can always hang up.

Can you call your therapist? It might be easier to talk to her rather than a complete stranger.

Even if your not scheduled, she may be able to get you in or talk to you so that you can get help.

I found that number online, but had heard about it on the radio.

If you call that number, there will be a short recording that will tell you that you've reached a suicide prevention hotline.

It will then play music while connecting you to a live person to talk to.

I understand it's very difficult to talk about, I think it's extremely brave of you to post a thread and ask for help.

Self harm is one of the things I find hardest to talk about. I can't advise on any US helplines as I'm in the UK, but it is something I have recently become more open about with my T and it has helped a little to have it out there.

There are people who are aware though.
Are these professionals or people you know on a personal level. Do any of them feel like they might be safe people to reach out to?

Do you feel like any of the injuries over the last 24 hours require medical attention?

@I'smom if you can, Google this song and listen to it. It has helped me through many times when I've felt hopeless.

Yes, I'm still here. I'm sorry. @Gia1019 thank you for the number. @digger I don't need medical attn., but thank you for asking. For the most part, I'm able to exercise a certain level of self-restraint, because my husband is now aware that I have been having a hard time, and I don't want to do anything to freak him out. I've been inclined to push it further and further recently though. That's what is different this time from the others. One of my friends is a personal friend, who also happens to be a professional. Awkwardly, I am in the social services field, and the majority of my colleagues are T's, but that doesn't mean I want to disclose to my peers.

You can also online chat available from the suicide hotline (google suicide.. this site won't let me post url addresses) if you do not feel that you can speak on the phone. If your trauma has anything to do with rape or sexual abuse, you can also get help via phone or online chat on RAINN; there is online chat available at Imalive as well.
