We have to go on a vacation that's already paid for from 29 Dec until 7 Jan... How awkward, as we have to just put everything aside and try to have fun until we return.

Six months ago, he decided to become an abusive, psychotic, destructive drunkard.

He most likely decided long before that, but that's neither here or there!

Being a former abusive, psychotic, destructive drunkard myself I can say that if he choses to remove the booze their may be help for the relationship and the other issues as well. What ever help he needs will be worthless if he still hitting the sauce. Do yourself a favor and get in touch with Al-anon for your own peace of mind.
