Songs You Relate To

What a great thread, I find listening to songs I relate to helps me actually feel sad without shutting down. I have an entire playlist on Spotify just for this:

Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends

Rise Against - Make It Stop (September's Children)

If you're not familiar with the subject of this song, it's about a number of teen suicides that occurred in September 2010, related to anti-gay bullying. While I was never bullied for being gay, I can certainly relate to being bullied to the point of suicidal thoughts, and it really hits home.

Rise Against - Hero Of War

blink-182 - Adam's Song

This song has a couple lyrics that I really resonate with when I feel particularly depressed. That feeling you get when everything just keeps going wrong and you want to give up over the smallest things:
"I trace the cord back to the wall,
No wonder it was never plugged in at all."

Avenged Sevenfold - M.I.A.
While I've never been to war, this song describes what it's like to be horrified about how gruesome war is, and what it's like to live every moment in total fear, which is something I definitely relate to. Plus it has some sweet guitar solos.

Slipknot - Snuff
"The air around me still feels like a cage.
And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again.
So if you love me, let me go.
And run away before I know.
My heart is just too dark to care,
I can't destroy what isn't there.
Deliver me into my fate,
If I'm alone I cannot hate.
I don't deserve to have you,
My smile was taken long ago, if I can change I hope I never know."

Staind - Epiphany
This song completely captures what it's like to dissociate around people, and not be able to be involved.
"Your words to me, a whisper.
Your face is so unclear.
I try to pay attention,
your words just disappear.

Cause it's always raining in my head,
Forget all the things I should have said."

And, of course, the epiphany:
"I am nothing more than,
A little boy inside.
That cries out for attention,
Yet I always try to hide."

The Verve Pipe - The Freshman

Pink - Family Portrait

Not usually my type of music, but this song describes the environment I grew up in to an almost uncanny level, aside from the perspective of a little girl. In fact, you could say I can imagine my little sister singing this song. Hits home, for sure.

Evanescence - My Tourniquet

Stone Sour - Bother

Evanescence - Imaginary

A song about a girl who lives inside her own head because the real world is too scary.

"In my field of paper flowers,
And candy clouds of lullaby.
I lie inside myself for hours,
And watch my purple sky fly over me.

Don't say I'm out of touch,
With this rampant chaos, your reality.
I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge,
The nightmare I build my own world to escape."

Rilo Kiley - A Better Son/Daughter
Found this song while looking for new songs for this playlist. It really covers the whole experience.
"Sometimes in the morning I am petrified and can't move,
Awake but cannot open my eyes.
And the weight is crushing down on my lungs, I know I can't breathe,
And hope someone will save me this time."

"And sometimes when you're on, you're really ******* on,
And your friends they sing along, and they love you
But the lows are so extreme
That the good seems ******* cheap.
And it teases you for weeks with it's absence.
But you'll fight and make it through,
You'll fake it if you have to."

Evanescence - Hello

I Dreamed A Dream - Les Miserables

There was a time when men were kind
When their voices were soft
And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
And the song was exciting
There was a time
Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

And still I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed

Now life has killed the dream I dreamed

Don't Leave Home by Dido

Oh how quiet, quiet the world can be
When it's just you and little me,
Everything is clear and everything is new,
So you won't be leaving will you?

If you're cold, I'll keep you warm.
If you're low just hold on,
'Cause I will be your safety.
Don't leave home.

Hand in my pocket by Alanis Morissette

I care, but I'm restless,
I'm here but I'm really gone,
I'm wrong and I'm sorry, baby,

And what it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright,
'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is flicking a cigarette.
And what it all comes down to,
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet.

They by Jem

Who made up all the rules?
We follow them like fools.
Believe them to be true,
Don't care to think them through.

And I'm sorry, so sorry,
I'm sorry it's like this.
I'm sorry, so sorry,
I'm sorry we do this.

And it's ironic, too,
'Cause what we tend to do
Is act on what they say,
And then it is that way.

And I'm sorry, so sorry.
I'm sorry it's like this
I'm sorry, so sorry.
I'm sorry we do this.

Who are they? Where are they?
How can they possibly know all this?
Who are they? Where are they?
How can they possibly know all this?

Do you see what I see?
Why do we live like this?
Is it because it's true
That ignorance is bliss?

I heard this song on a show and it touched me so much I couldn't help brake down and cry. As a sufferer of ptsd it just touched my soul and gave me sense of comfort. I will put the lyrics and encourage those who enjoyed and connected to to listen to the song by Bill Fay, I like the AC Newman version better because it is little more fast pace. Hope you all enjoy it.

Be not so nervous, be not so frail
Someone watches you, you will not fail
Be not so nervous, be not so frail
Be not so nervous, be not so frail
Be not so sorry for what you've done
You must forget them now, it's done
And when you wake up you will find you can run
Be not so sorry for what you've done
Be not so fearful, be not so pale
Someone watches you, you will not leave the rails
Be not so fearful, be not so pale
Be not so fearful, be not so pale
Be not so sorry for what you've done
You must forget them now, it's done
And when you wake up you will find you can run

The Disappearance of the Girl by Phildel

I don't know where I've been
And it's been such a long time
Since I really saw the difference
Between you and I...
And I don't know where I stand,
Faced with a cruel world,
I'd say everything points to,
The disappearance of the girl...

Ooh, hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
You know, you know he betrays you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
As much, as much as he saves you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
If I, if I could persuade you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah

I need you to see
There's not much innocence
In the imposed darkness
Of imposed silence
I need you to see
The good in everything
Cos the only thing that saves you,
Is your economy of blessings

Ooh, hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
You know, you know he betrays you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
As much, as much as he saves you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
If I, if I could persuade you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah

Are you still waiting
For the real thing to save you?
Cos it isn't there,
And you know that he doesn't even care
About you,

But ooh, yeah, hey, yeah,
You know, you know he betrays you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
As much, as much as he saves you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah,
If I, if I could persuade you,
Hey, yeah, hey, yeah

GooGoo Dolls - Iris

And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive

Imagine Dragons - Monster

Skillet - Monster

"Shadow Of A Lonely Man"

Look at me now, a shadow of the man I used to be...
Look through my eyes and through the years of loneliness you'll see...
To the times in my life when I could not bear to lose
A simple game.
And the least of it all was the fortune and the fame...
But the dream seemed to end just as soon as it had begun...
Was I to know?
For the last thing of all that was on my mind
Was the close at the end of the show.
The shadow of a lonely man feels nobody else...

In the shadow of a lonely, lonely man
I can see myself...

(Looking out of nowhere...Looking out of nowhere...)

But the sound of the crowds when they come to see me now,
Is not the same.
And the jest of it all is I can't recall my name.
But I cling to a hope till I can't hold on anymore...anymore...
And for all the acclaim, I am all alone!
And I see as I look through the door,

The shadow of a lonely man...There's nobody else...
In the shadow of a lonely, lonely man
I can see myself!

...Look at me now, a shadow of the man I used to be....

~Alan Parsons Project~

Eminem - Love The Way You Lie

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn
Well that's alright because I like the way it hurts
Just gonna stand there and hear me cry
Well, that's alright because I love the way you lie
I love the way you lie

Everything for Free
K's Choice

I don't know who you are
But you seem very nice
So will you talk to me
Shall I tell you a story
Shall I tell you a dream
They think I'm crazy
But they don't know that I like it here
It's nice in here, I get
Everything for free

Have you been here before
Shall I show you around
It's very pretty
Have you come here to stay?
Well, you sure picked a day
My name is Billy
It's my birthday you're invited
To my party down the hall

Where I'll go, what I'll become, or who I am
Or what I'll be
I'll never know
But I am sure that I'll get
Everything for free

I'm not troubled or sad
I'm just ready for bed
It's been a long day
Before they switch off the lights
It truly was a delight
They think I'm crazy
But they don't know that I like it here
It's nice in here...

I don't know who you are
But you seem very nice
So will you talk to me
Have you come here to stay?
Well you sure picked a day
They think I'm crazy
