How did they even track you down? I need to get a prepaid cell for reasons like this!
It was a mobile crisis counselor. She came to the house. I refused to go in - so she called the police. I explained to them that I had been drinking but that I was safe and going to bed. Apparently, this was sufficient for her so she filed an affidavit the next morning. My son was at home and told the police where I worked - so they came there to pick me up. It was surreal...and deeply traumatizing.
That said, I did have a good experience with a hotline (I think it was similar to the Samaritans in the UK) where the guy on the phone did "active listening". I was able to just talk for a while and he validated what I said. I understand that these folks aren't there to fix anything - more of a bandage I suppose.
One good thing that came of the whole thing - I was able to recognize that I can't use hotlines as a crutch and I've been working really hard on developing other, healthier (for me) tools to get me through crisis times (as well as tools to stop things from turning into a total crisis).
