Just wondering if anyone has tried taking magnesium for depression and anxiety. I started taking it becuase of really bad leg cramps after exercise. I got to reading more about magnesium and its benefits. One thing that it is good for stress . I've been taking it for a few weeks, and my leg cramps are gone, I thought my potassium was low, but I am drinking orange juice and eating bananas...still had cramps . I also read it can help with depression. I do know for sure that I feel great!!! More energy, and a better frame of mind. Has anyone tried it?

It helped---MAYBE my son stop grinding his teeth.
He would grind them so hard at night I thought he would be
without teeth

Tried it and it stop--now years later still does not grind them
The book I read this tid-bit in still exists in later versions
but the response to tooth grinding is out
guessing not enough research to back it up

6 versions came out or more and that info was only in one of the first prototype
once

but it worked for him----or was other stuff going on at the same time? hard to know for sure, certainly
It was a serious problem for a long period of time
his little body needed something
it seems this met that need

FYI family tales
For cramps
shot of vinigear-you'll live and the positive results, instant
of the orange, it is the white part that gets the positive response that we look for
so peel an organge and do a very poor job of it-enjoy

I'd go easy on the magnesium supplements. Too much can cause mg toxicity. Symptoms would include abdominal cramps and diarrhea.
In addition some magnesium salts will cause diarrhea.
Magnesium deficiency is uncommon in developed countries, many foods are rich in magnesium.
This is an area best left to your Dr to evaluate.

I have been taking 500mgs of magnesium daily for yrs to help with Fibromyalgia. You need to take it along with Calcium in order for it to be absorbed the right way (or some such crap) I think the biggest thing all of us can do is go to your Dr and have your Vit D level checked. Vit d deficiency is becoming a huge peroblem here in the states. People are not getting enough sunlight, and suscreen is put into almost everything nowadays.

Vit D is important and there are studies to show that it is use to try and prevent certain types of cancer, and Multiple Sclerosis. But the biggest thing is what it does for Depression....I take 4000 IU daily along with Calcium and Magnesium and so far this year the depression has been kept to a minimal...

I have a vitamin D defiency, and this is what my Dr has perscribed for now. My blood will be retested in Jan to see where my levels are.

I know that I do get enough calcium, esp. in OJ with calcium and vit D. Magnesium deficiency is more common than you think. Even in developed countries it is a problem. For Magnesium to become toxic, you must have renal issues.

Magnesium can become toxic in high doses, but it is rare. We are realizing more and more that magnesium is an electrolyte that affects the heart, so toxicity is no minor issue.

Risk of toxiciity is higher in pt's with renal problems, because the kidneys cant properly filter and remove excess magnesium from the blood.

Bottom line, check with you MD, PA or NP before taking ANY supplements!

I've tried magnesium for issues other than depression...my chiropractor had me taking it as a daily supplement, and in large amounts when my neck would lock up. It certainly does clean out the bowels when taken in large doses!

I recently did a cleanse (with the guidance of a naturopath), and went off my usual supplements, but took a new calcium/magnesium blend. I really didn't notice it helping. I did find that eating a super "clean", sugar-free, raw, natural diet made a huge difference (I already knew that from when I ate that way about 5 years ago, but hadn't the impetus to start it again til recently). I was way more balanced, and far less prone to the usual mood swings...my bladder issues have disappeared as well, and my female cycles are easier. I've stayed off supplements, with the exception of borage/flax/fish oils, and have felt better.
