News Terrorist Attack In Paris

Unfortunately, for a large variety of reasons, this was bound to happen. These types of attacks really can't be prevented in many cases. Even if you completely ban guns, it's impossible to stop explosives. Also, there's no clear enemy state. Terror is very complicated, My friend and I were discussing terror before the attacks and we agreed that the solution is so multifactorial that it's implementation is not very likely. He has done copious amounts of research on terrorism.

I'm still in shock about what happened. Paris is less than 900 km away from me - the threat is getting closer in any way. I feel with all the people in Paris and I'm so shocked that it happened to them twice in a year. I'm with all my colleagues from the French police who are out there in the danger.

...the incidents made me think about taking my gun home with me when I leave work (I usually leave it there) and if it's alright to visit the huge Christmas markets around here...but I don't want to hide at home. I went to a concert yesterday and the played songs were highly connected to the current attack. It was very moving...but still...it's frightening.

That some of the culprits who committed these acts and murder were "refugees", and that our president had just spoken about how "ISIL/ISIS" was "contained" the morning of the tragedy in Paris.... and that 10,000 unvetted refugees are arriving in New Orleans and that our nation has cut a deal to accept (numbers vary) between 240,000 and a half a million of these.... AND that funding for the efforts was redirected AWAY from the Veterans Administration makes my head explode and I'm really ticked off.

What better way than mass migration to cover the infiltration of these terrorist organizations to spread their mental illness, criminal acts, and ideology?

Not to diminish in any way the horror of what happened (I've been crying since I first saw the story), but what is even sadder is that this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. This is the saddest part in this whole equation. Haters are going to hate, and many take up arms to express their mindless rage on innocents around the world. I truly don't understand it and I don't think I want to. I think back to the senseless violence that has played out over hundreds of years and it sickens me.

I found myself praying for all of our world leaders and our military around the world to figure out a way to stop this, but am not optimistic. I often wonder why we haven't had more of this in the US, but I think the twin towers, Boston, and other attacks were just the start. Also, why not London, Rome, Munich, Moscow, all of South America, etc...? Maybe they think we are doing their dirty work because we already have Americans killing Americans - another thread on that one.

I was unaware of what The Albatross mentioned above. Certainly not a good move on the part of the US. I try not to watch the news, but have been receiving free copies of the WSJ for the past couple of weeks, so am engaging a little more. Don't we have enough of a problem trying to keep an eye on iffy persons in the US that are here on visas? Also, we are refusing to allow folks from Mexico to come over the boarder, but are allowing possible terrorists? Makes no sense to me when we can't even take care of our community or our neighbors.

Lost on this one, heartbroken and praying for the families and victims alike. I think I should have added to my gratitude entry that I am very thankful to be living in a place where I, truly, don't worry too much about a terrorist attack happening as I make my way to the grocery or pharmacy. Praying for the survivors too as they must feel like prisoners in their own country and all those who fled their countries in the Middle East to get away from these monsters. God help us all. VB

It was also infuriating to me that France CLOSED their borders but according to a certain large segment of our population here in the US, our incumbent president, his administration and a goodly number of US representatives that is not something we can or should do. Ya think we can close our borders here in the US? Eh, nope. Good on France for at least HAVING the ability to close their borders. I think all sovereign nations need to have the ability to do so without apology or angst from a certain segment of people who see this as a "human rights/humanitarian" issue.

There's been a bit of confusion over the French boarders thing. The president said that he was closing the boarders but it hasn't actually happened. They've raised the security and checks but to close the boarders completely is impossible. The (stupid) ability for anyone within the EU to move around without passports etc within Eurpe has made closing the boarders impossible. They're now insisting on passports to be presented to the authorities but they can't close as they'd like to.

French police are currently trying to ascertain whether the "refugee" who came into Europe actually was a Syrian refugee or was using a fake passport/documentation. I wouldn't be surprised if it was fake documents, but even it isn't fake; Merkel has said that anyone from Syria will be allowed in. I get that we need to help those being bombed daily but I don't think allowing them all to escape to a new life in Europe is the sensible way to do it. Interestingly, Germany has gone rather quiet on the whole thing.

A few thoughts:

Radical extremism grows within my country's borders. So many people have been caught already trying to leave to join ISIS/ISIL/Daesh.

There were also many deaths in the Egyptian plane bombing and in Betruit - and oddly, no one is turning their FB picture to the Egyptian flag but almost every person on my FB feed has changed theirs profile picture to the French flag. It's not a bad thing to change it to that flag at all, I did so myself.

It is interesting.

Everyone expects violence in the Middle East to happen over there. To those people. And it's not really need in the west when it does happen.

Now it is not so far away, and chances are, it will soon be even closer to home for many in the west.

The more deaths that happen the more the west will jump into the fray in the Middle East and the more people already in the west or headed that way will be radicalized and the more deaths there will be....

It's like the cycle of abuse occurring in the grandest scale.

So how are we to respond? How does this end?

I don't know if anyone has any good answers. Makes me want to love people better though. I can't change a damn thing happening on a global scale but maybe I can be a force for kindness in my own neighborhood or street. It's not much. It's hard to have hope in such a dark world.

I do believe that love will win over the darkness... eventually.
