Do you do it? How often? What context? Do you only do therapy topics or more of a anything goes type deal? Just curious on this topic for others.

I generally only text if she does first. She has texted midweek to check in. And I’ll answer. Once I texted when i wanted her to read an email because I wanted her help making a decision. She sends book recommendations through text and through Facebook messenger. She also often sends articles through messenger. I rarely reply to any of these. I use email a couple times a month.

My T doesn't generally allow texts between sessions. Although once during a long break I was able to. It was more of a general 'hello I'm still here text' and I got a relatively pleasant adequate response. I wasn't expecting a conversation and knew it would be a once off.

Texts only for appointments for me too.

I had a therapist I texted with about many things. She would even initiate it. It backfired badly...

I am allowed to email my therapist now. But she doesn’t respond. We discuss in session and I self limit it to one email a week (two if it’s a really tough week.) That helps. I email whatever. Because we always talk about it face to face, and because she doesn’t write back, it actually keeps it pretty boundaried and avoids miscommunications.

A lot of what happens in therapy is non-verbal, and involves tones and facial expressions and etc. I think texts can loose that so easily. So quickly.

I have her number but I’ve never texted her. We email & she usually answers immediately so it’s pretty much like texting. I am already way too attached to her & I’m afraid I might become way too dependent if I cross the line into texting. I’m sure she would welcome it because she has told me to but I feel like I take up too much of her time as it is.
