Yer... and mental illness doesn't help. There are literally thousands of people here, over a thousand active members at any one time... and we all know moods can be somewhat shaky.

Unfortunately, whilst people may think they can use those moods here and direct them here, they can't... because one mood can send many members into an immediate tail spin, all because of mental illness... hence, PTSD.

Staff are very well coached here on how to handle things, and staff policy exists for good reason due to the subject of this forum. A member often thinks they are being avoided because they try and contact staff via PC about a forum matter, get directed to the help forum instead, regardless of time here... because experience has dictated such things can end badly all round, for all involved. Keep things public, open and honest as possible, and this place tends to function much smoother, even though honesty can be harsh at times.

Hi... I am new and read the forum rules and felt reassured by them, the internet can empower us in many ways not always good and its good to know that there is a structure here, a formula designed to help me and others learn how to cope better, its important to understand why I am here, but also what my place is here what my goals are and I am not too proud to ask for your help.

Oh, I think the threat is one of those annoying knee-jerk things ( ahem- some Americans do, with 'My lawyer can womp snot outa your lawyer'. It's generally crap. The people who threaten this, or 99.99999% of them do not HAVE a lawyer I guess what, on retainer or something, which seems to be the implication here? That is extremely expensive, with fees being a minimum of 100 bucks an hour for a phone conversation, if one DOES have one. That was 3000 bucks retainer, in order to have a layer sitting around, waiting for the next time you're feeling insulted. Hee. If I were you I'd say 'Ok', then send them the bill from the phone conversation with your attorney you had to have to cover your backside when the ninnie made this threat.

I don't make a phone call to anyone, no need... because there is no action until they send me something in writing, and even then, still nothing occurs until they file with a court, because the law just isn't with a poster in regards to their content rights.

This has been fought in courts worldwide by big and small companies, individuals, and 99% of them lose, because as long as its not illegal, then its legal. Its like slander... you can call someone a moron all you want online, because you can't prove you weren't one / aren't one or the person is interpreting your text as being one. But if you said a person is a rapist, and they're not, then that is slanderous. Either way, the owner of the site cannot be taken to court if two members are slandering one another, because they must prove in court first, then a court will order the owner to remove the content. The owner has no obligation until such evidence and proof that something is slanderous, that is when they must act or are in breach of law themselves. Basically, a website owner is not a court and does not have a legal obligation to act as judge and jury for anything members post upon their site.

Outright slander is about the only thing that wins in court from websites... basically, if you post it online, then you just lost control of it by law.

Until it gets filed in a court here, I don't bother raising my eyebrow to it. It just annoys me that people are that stupid to begin with in order to make such threats so readily.

I have to admit it really is a 'thing' here. 'You'll be hearing from my lawyer' is the end of an awful lot of arguments, instead of resolving something. In the OLD days they just had a good old punch 'em up and then went and had a beer. :) Cheaper too.

It's because of the american education system, four letter words are cuss words, and 5 letter words are too complex. 3 letter words are the biggest words understood by the american consiousness. (It is a joke, I can say it because I'm American- or as I understand Ame-ric-ann)

I like punch up and go have a beer afterwards. Best way to sort things out IMHO.

OMG! The world and the people in it never ceases to amaze me. I am a true computer illiterate person and even I get the rules of posting and all the legal stuff that goes with it. For the love of god, what rock did these people crawl out from under?

I have a lawyer :D She lives in my living room and is a comfy pillow. But she would probably laugh if I said "The internet hurt my feelings and I want to sue!"

The internet business is a slippery slope. I have legally had information removed from the internet about myself, and it is a very difficult process to endure. You basically have to prove that the information posted was either illegally obtained (I.E People taking pictures of you and posting them online, for example) or it threatens your safety (such as possibly, posting my name online here and then realizing people want to hurt me, so I have to petition to have that removed).

But I would think the moderators here would not really be so unreasonable as to remove information like that for that reason regardless, as I sincerely doubt a genuine plea for legitimate safety over revealing details would be ignored (as some people here are computer illiterate they may unknowingly post their real name and stuff and they have their names changed, etc, which is allowed) as this place isn't inhuman, but, if they didn't, it is understandable: I chose to post the information in the first place.

Mine was the latter (involuntary information posted that was risky to me, not here obviously but somewhere else) and it took a lot just to have minor information (Such as my name) removed that I didn't even post. If I actually wrote a post with all that crap in it and knowingly posted it...I don't even know. It took a lot just to have information I didn't volunteer removed. It has made me really cautious about volunteering information to begin with. Once it is out there, it is out there. If someone tried hard enough even though that information is deleted, it's still stored and can still be obtained.

Though I doubt anybody is that interested in me :p it's possible.

If you watch TV in the US, you will see commercial after commercial for lawyers advertising "Have you or your loved one been hurt by (fill in the blank) or "do you think you have suffered harm from (fill in blank) - so it would not surprise me that the threat is peculiar to Americans.

Threatening someone when you feel vulnerable and helpless is a common tactic in the immature. When I was growing up, people would threaten to sick their older sibling or father on a foe. If you couldn't take care of your own fight, then you projected someone bigger and tougher as the one who would do the job.

People with any mental illness can feel helpless. They often also are suspicious, fearful, and ashamed of their own illness. While they write things down in one mental state, in another mental state they might suddenly regret or be fearful of what they wrote. So while it is unpleasant to be subjected to those threats, they may stem from the inner turmoil most of go through with revealing anything.

Finally, PTSD and Borderline Personality Disorder are often grown in the same garden - and borderlines have problems with boundaries, rules.

Personally, I think it's what Girl3 said, GREAT ADs and those infamously ridiculously won cases for so-said MILLIONS of dollars. Once you pick through the actual reality of those cases that cash flow generally never occurs, appeals are filed at added cost to clients, attorneys drop cases, and so on and so forth.

But gee, it makes for a great empty threat :)

Side Note: I've fought off a few lawyers my own little originally a high school drop-out self..so beware when forking over the cash, be very very thoughtful about the issue at hand because quite frankly, they do love to bill by the minute, even if it's getting an underlying post form letter with stamped signature on it. The longer those minutes stack up the better.
