Healing means taking many baby steps, but sometimes, looking back over a full year, there are a few strides that really stand out. Let's celebrate the positives in this thread. What were the best three things that you did in 2011 to help you heal from PTSD?

These could include any steps towards getting better at using coping strategies or grounding techniques, building healthier relationships, cutting off unhealthy relationships, confronting memories, living a healthier lifestyle, improved self-awareness, reducing substance use, greater disclosure in therapy, etc.

#1. I told my T what I really thought of him.
#2. I started owning myself, my behavior, and my accountability in society and mostly in my relationships.
#3. I ran a marathon (after accomplishing some serious fundraising efforts) in honor of the memory of a beloved friend that took his own life 20 years ago (on Dec. 25th)

I have much larger goals for 2012.

1. Beat "random suicidal thoughts"
2. No more night terrors... violent disturbing dreams.
3. Increased "face time" and reduced "down time" to 1-2 days a week instead of 3-4.
4. Set and defended (kindly) boundaries with my mother, MIL and my spouse.
5. Went back to work for the Y and applied for and interviewed for several other positions (but didn't get them).
6. More consistent with self care and disassociated less, had self awareness and was able to ground to get through difficult situations or deal with difficult people.

1. Cut off all contact with my parents.

2. Came to trust and to be more open with my T. It's still a work in progress, but it took forever to even get there.

3. Managed to keep working all year, with only brief absences that didn't warrant formal leave. I'm sure that this kept me going more than i care to admit.

4. Some healthier boundaries with my sister. Only some, but it's a start.

5. Disclosed my past to a couple of trusted others. I swoere this would never happen. It was hard, but it was safe, the right thing to have done.

6. I survived. This feels like the greatest and most difficult achievement of all.
