Natural Disaster Tornadoes - Major Stressor For Me

Since creating this thread I have moved to the historic district in another town. Now I have a church right next door and can get to the center of the house if need be or go to the church for shelter.

Spring is still around the corner and already, I am feeling anxious about the stormy weather to come. A tornado hit this area a few years back and luckily, it just hit the edge of town, but it still freaks me out quite a bit. I have had many a nightmare about tornadoes chasing me and the end of the world.

I hope others in this area will prepare themselves for bad storms and stay safe.

The “Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974” occurred across portions of the Midwest, Lower Mississip...
I know exactly what you mean . I live in Louisiana and I was involved in the February 23 F2 tornado that hit convent , la. I was in the sugar hill camp ground when it hit . I was in a camper when it hit and it exploded around me and threw me out dragging me over 150 yards ending up trapped under debris .

So I'm with you cause now if a thunder storm comes I start getting sick and scared . I'm a Christian and I pray very hard about it but it's like a post u saw on Facebook that said you can forget the storm but the storm won't forget you

It's something I will never forget . I have a fractured neck , compressed disc in my neck , 3 broke toes , had to have 2 surgeries on my left arm , stitchs in my right foot , and cuts and bruises from head to toe

My name reflects my history. Born early 70s live in Texas. PTSD for many reasons. Tornadoes and hail and lightning were just extra trauma on top of it. Someone should study stress levels in Tornado Alley but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know they must be elevated from the sound of tornado sirens alone.

So last year on Mother's Day we got hit by a tornado at home. And 2 days ago hail so big it busted a hole in a gas meter, totaled thousands of cars busted windshields of cars and windows of homes and shut down a school system. One hailstone even went through a roof and ceiling into someone's living room. I was telling my husband he needed safety glasses to open the door. The hail was shattering into a million pieces and just exploding in all possible directions. It makes you realize we are not as separated from nature and the elements as we like to think. It elevates anxiety yes. It really is traumatic as hell no matter how normal it seems due to repetition. When you get hit by a tornado at home with nowhere to run or hide it changes you forever and makes you more grateful for life. It does other things too. Maybe part of why Texas is such an extreme place. With such extreme people. When you face tornadoes and hail that could cave in a skull every year you ain't afraid a much. Don't be around when the clouds touch the ground or dig a hole.

Thank you @Nam

I appreciate the feedback!!!! I realize that tornadoes are a legitim...

I know how you feel. We live in a crappy rent house with nowhere to hide. And when the tornado was coming I wanted to get in the car and haul ass but my husband didn't think we had time and we didn't. We are just lucky it wasn't a huge tornado. I took the top off our oak and threw it into the house and knocked down trees all over the place scary as hell and it was an F-1. Even if you have a shelter at home a tornado can catch you on the road. People died this year on the highway in my area because of tornadoes. I have dreamed all my life of having a piece of land with a tornado shelter. I don't care about the house it could be a shack, but I want a damn good tornado shelter. Crazy when the dream house doesn't matter the dream is to have a safe room underground like the rich people do.
