Trazadone?

I have been trying different meds for several years now. SSRIs give me the worst flat affect. Prozac made me borderline manic, while Paxil (I hate that drug) made me just insane.

After years of self medicating with drugs and alcohol, I finally found a doctor who would listen to me when I said that SSRIs are not compatible with me, and he put me on Effexor.

ME TOO ME TOO. I took paxil and hated it. I also gained a lot of weight. I could regulate my emotions great because I had none. I couldn't even cry when it was normal to cry. It was just not right.

I flat out REFUSED to try any other SSRI after that and told him that he had better figure out something else. I asked about Buspar but he said it's efficacy isn't that great and takes awhile to work. He put me on Pristiq (admittedly he's kind of a pill pusher) but it turns out that SNRI's work significantly better for me.

Sometimes I take wellbutrin xl 150mg, but any more than that throws me off in a negative way. However, the wellbutrin combats other issues and I don't want to take any higher dose of effexor than 150mg (I switched to generic effexor because my plan does not cover pristiq and it's kind of the same anyway).

I've just been kind of aggressive about my treatment, and my doctor listens to me which is lucky. I've also flat out said I will refuse to take anything that makes me gain weight, and I ask for specific meds.

I take 50mg of trazodone to sleep also, but I still self medicate with marijuana sometimes because the effexor doesn't always help me enough.

Benzo's are horrible for me, so I mean. What do I do?

Hello everyone. I just got prescribed Trazadone for my night terrors. Haven't had the prescription filled yet. Generally don't have a problem falling asleep, but I have graphic, terrible, realistic night terrors and often cry or scream or flail and wind up scratching myself up sometimes while I sleep.

Has anyone noticed nightmares improved on Trazadone?

I was on Trazodone 50-100 mg/nightly for two months. I gave it time, as my Father also suffers from PTSD, and told me to give it a go. It helped me sleep, but I had the worst dreams on it! They were so graphically lucid and relentless. I don't know what I am going to do as an alternative to it. I need to contact my P as soon as possible. I had to simply stop taking it. On picking up my Lexapro 20 mg at the pharmacy today, they noticed I was no longer taking it. I told them it was because of the bad dreams and, for me, extreme nausea. I like food, not nausea.

For the poster who suspects SSRI's contributing to problems take a look at this excerpt from a research paper.

Acute 5-HT Reuptake Blockade Potentiates Human Amygdala Reactivity
Neuropsychopharmacology (2008) 33, 3221–322
If anyone wants the whole paper let me know and I will email it to you.

Thank you for posting this. Do you have thoughts on how this might be relevant to an earlier post just a few messages above yours about A1 vs A2 recepotors...(Trazadone on A2 rather than A1 receptors I believe?)

I had serious anxiety reactions to Buspar over a decade ago and to Exffexor also. Trazadone, on the other hand, I feel helps with sleep without giving me a manic or emotionally numb. However if I take it more than a couple of nights in a row I do notice that I start feeling more agitated and perhaps even angry.

Mmm, I love Trazodone. It really helps me sleep well at night and it helps me stay asleep. I just got bumped up back to 100mg after I noticed it was starting to lose it's effectiveness. But it's great, I'm just happy to sleep. As for nightmares, I take it along with Celexa and I think they're more lucid than anything.

I have a trazodone prescription, to help me sleep and for anxiety and so far it seems helpful which was kind of uprising after prozac, klonopin, mirtazapine, anti-histamines as sleep aides and wellbutrin didn't work and/or made things worse.

I also have a prescription for effexor but I am afraid to give it a try. Anytime I consider maybe just going for it I worry about affording it or rather whether or not my mom would or could cover the cost for me, at least till I get on SSI (if I do).

I take 300mg of Trazadone every night, I still don't sleep. I am also on Zoloft 200mg daily. Plus Neurontin 3 times a day. I am not happy with this combination, but it seems like my Psychiatrist isn't listening.
