Trying To Understand Dissociation

Once triggered does a sufferer dissociate in a general sense or is their dissociation more channeled in one particular direction or another ? (Patience please I am know I am probably not asking the right questions)

So far as my own personal disassociation... over time with experience, yeah there are some "rules" but I expect it is intensely personal and they were learned/brought to awareness over time.

I actually have some cues, which is something now... if I am attending and fully present. I am not always fully present, nor am I fully attending... however there is, like Wiki describes a wide scope to the kind and type and experience or level of disassociation for me.

Dissociation covers a pretty wide spectrum of symptoms and behaviours the blend of which tends to be fairly unique to the individual.

Assuming you are asking with respect to a specific person known to you, you are unlikely I think to work out a set of rules that apply to them based on responses here.

When you use the term 'triggered', what are you observing in their behaviours as to what that means for them?

@The Albatross thank you, it was reading Wikipedia that brought me here. I have been back there again and will continue until I can make sense of it, it's pretty heavy stuff.

Thanks too @digger, I will have to regroup on this one. I am now doubting my original understanding.

Here is another link for you as I think with dissociation it helps to hear different people put it into every day language as best as possible. Its an internal thing so would not be aimed at different people differently unless the persons perception or ability to see or hear that particular person is what is happening.

For example my one t triggered me and when I looked at her I saw my fathers face. I recently spoke to someone else here who would forget who specific people were when exposed to them.Because something about them alone set him off. Most commonly it is general and not specific.

That general dissociation can be set off by specific things or people or can be set off by a general increase in stress. Words are always difficult when it comes to dissociation so what might help is if you describe what you see and hear with your friend and what she says about it.

What Do You Mean By "dissociation"?

Are you asking if there are people around whom you tend to dissociate? Maybe.
I dissociate in therapy because we talk triggering topics. I can dissociate in a restaurant with my spouse if she isn't talking to me. I can dissociate alone if my mind wanders. My family is far away so not a factor. Rules are probably strictly personal based upon your history and situation.

After reading the responses, I am feeling a bit foolish myself. When I first read the original post, I thought the poster was asking if it is okay to dissociate in the presence of a person and, if so, what rules might be in place to determine around whom one can dissociate.

However, I have to admit, I am just beginning to learn about dissociation and how it pertains to me specifically. After experiencing some seizures about a year ago, only to find that they were dissociative events (non-epileptic seizures), I have been painstakingly working at understanding how I dissociate, how best to ground myself, and how to stop dissociating. Good luck in your research!
