Very Anxious About Oral Surgery Tomorrow

I need to get my wisdom teeth out and this has been planned for a few weeks. They are going use anesthesia with me so I wont even be awake. I am afraid I will fight them or somehow fight the drugs.

I am terrified I wont wake up.

I quickly texted my therapist tonight becasue it was really just hitting me. He was encouraging me to remember the benefits of the surgery and the problems if I didn't have it. He reminded me that my husband will be there and to breathe normally. He wished me luck and said "I know you can do this!" that made me smile. :)

Support? Words of wisdom anyone? I am trying to not feel so much anxiety.

If I could, I would send you flowers and a milkshake for your post-op recovery. I had a milkshake after my surgery.

If this will help you at all -- once they put the IV in, I looked up at the fluorescent lighting in the ceiling. They'll tell you to count back from 100. I remember saying, "The colors... in the light..." because I saw swirling colors. The doctor just laughed and I eventually saw everything turn to gray. Then I was out. But, I woke up afterwards, got a milkshake, took some vicodin at home, and watched Spongebob until I fell asleep.

You'll be fine. They know what they're doing -- they pull wisdom teeth all the time. You'll feel loopy afterwards, but don't worry -- it's a side effect of the anesthesia. You'll feel so tired, anyways, that you won't even try to fight. Just take advantage of the vacation from doing anything around the house for a couple of days, haha.

If your mouth still feels sore after pain killers, have some more ice cream and milk shakes. Rest as much as you want. You earned it, especially after your stellar semester in college.

I'll send you warm vibes and positive thoughts.

You will be in the safe hands of a professional. With you Husband there with you then after the surgery and you wake up you will have a loving face to look up into.

Hold onto the thought of him smiling down with love when you come round.

Offering my :hug:s

Hello Ayesha, just popping by to let you know that I am thinking of you. I hope it all goes well for you!

I can't wait to read about your next semester, learning new things, progressing and having your mentor. It is exciting to think what you are going to do.

I will think of you during the next week hoping you will fell better soon.[DOUBLEPOST=1403154286,1403154178][/DOUBLEPOST]If you need distraction perhaps we can hold a wild disco for you in chat? See how you feel?

It's normal to feel nervous , I used to work in oral surgery and they are very good at helping anxious patients. It is usually quite a quick procedure and the worrying about it is probably the worst part. Although it can be a bit sore after - avoid any thing too hot or cold after as it can effect the blood clotting in the sockets. They will give you instructions .

It will soon be over and they will take care of you and you only have to go through this once - best to get rid - wisdom teeth can be very painful .

I'll be sending good and healing thoughts your way, today.
If you can, as soon as you wake up, remind yourself to keep you jaw still, until you and gently notice how small movements effect you pain level.

Make sure you have pain meds to go home and if permitted take anti-inflammatories as well (Aleve, ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.)

The professionals will make sye you do well!

Great therapist!

I had all 4 of mine (impacted) taken out. I have a HUGE phobia about shots. (I DO fight, pretty much everything. LOL) It went ok. The Dr was very nice (even though I wasn't.) After they finally got the needle in, they told me to start counting. I realized that I was being moved, wondered what was going on. What was going on was that I was waking up & it was all over with.

What ever you do, don't try to spit out the pain pills, it REALLY hurts! (They tasted bad, I tried to spit them out......) Beyond that, it wasn't as bad as I expected at all. Cold soup was actually kind of good to eat. (And ice cream, of course!)

I hope it goes well!

Good luck today. Even in my profession, I hate dental procedures, lol, I am as chicken sh*t as they come. I had my last two wisdom teeth extracted at the ripe age of 46, so chicken was I, under conscious sedation. I remember the dental nurse telling me she was giving me Versed, which is pretty potent benzo used for sedation before medical procedures along with fentanyl, and that was it. I "woke" up in another room, that they had to have walked me to, none the worse for wear, went home with Tylenol 3s and soup.

My surgeon worked in an office alongside another one who frequented the floor I used to work on. He was from South Africa, I called him Dr. McDrooly, he was such a stud muffin that I could not even be on the floor with him without blushing and turning into a blithering idiot. He was one of the last visions I had before going "under " as he passed by the room ;)

Cheers, doll, it will all be good.

@Ayesha
OMG you sound just like me!! I have even gone to interview the oral surgeon before I'd book the extraction. You are definitely looking at this through the lens of PTSD. Breathe slow and deep and thank God for being asleep for it. They extract them so fast you won't believe it. Oral surgeons are medical doctors that do a general surgery residency AND an oral surgery fellowship. They are very well trained. Very well. And they know that MOST people have a dental phobia.

I have worked in operating rooms and I assure you, when you're under you won't fight. You will be very relaxed. As soon as the procedure is done, they turn off the IV and you wake up groggy or maybe wide awake. If you are nauseous don't hesitate to ask for anti nausea medicine.

They usually prescribe a codeine pain killer. If you know you can't tolerate codeine let them know. You are young aren't you? You will heal fast but expect pain on day 3or 4. I manage it with Advil. It's ok to ask about taking your meds, but really, the anasthesia wears off then you just feel a wee hung over but relaxed.

ICE PACKS you won't be sorry on this matter. 20 minutes on 20 minutes off for the whole day.

I am always afraid I won't wake up. This from someone has seen a lot of surgery. Honest-you'll be done quick. You can't drive and you'll talk funny. Mashed potatoes jello scrambled eggs and don't forget to ask for anti nausea meds if you're quesy.

I've had a lot of extractions because before they knew it was the chemicals causing sinus tumors in me, they thought the severe pain I had was fractured teeth because I'm a grinder. Ended up losing healthy teeth.

They've got the gig down to a science. It's all good. I always tell them I'm afraid. The nurses are great. Good luck and good healing.
