What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?

I wanted to be a teacher. While I only did 2 years of college, I still got to become a teacher of sorts. I started by helping Jamaican people study for their citizenship tests in CT. Then I became a teacher in the Red Cross. I taught cpr/first aid, infant and child cpr, the EMT training, I also taught people to be able to become instructors. My most favorite "teaching job" was homeschooling my daughter until I enrolled her in school.

I love this question @Mafia_Science , it has been so nice to see what everyone has wanted to do, breaking them out of their shell a little bit. Thank you for posting this x

Mostly I wanted to be able to escape my family. When that eventually happened, I struggled to find my identity. It was hard doing everything alone without any financial support or family to fall back on. But I found solace in horses and during my time working with them I decided I wanted to do medicine. Unfortunately medicine seemed like an impossible feat without financial backup or having contacts in the field. So I settled for nursing and I'm so glad now as it gives me time for family etc that medics over here do not enjoy. I'm now a family health nurse. Meeting new babies and witnessing different family dynamics is incredibly rewarding, and my colleagues are the best.

I remember a friend in college telling me his mum had over 15 different careers in her life. I thought that was amazing, getting the life experiences from trying out different avenues. I'm definitely still not settled in my career. When I get my PTSD under better control and when my kids are a little older, I'm aiming to get into some form of counselling / therapy work. A good friend of mine is a psychotherapist and she says it's the most challenging but heart nourishing work she's ever done. I always want to feel challenged but those real rewards of genuinely helping another heal and being a small but significant part in their journey is what I have eventually realised as my calling if you like. For me, my career path had helped me reinvent myself and secure a more solid sense of identity.

After seeing the Musical "OLIVER" live on Broadway (NYC) when I was a kid, I decided I wanted to be an "acter." I did not know that there were actors and actresses back then, and my mind conjured up the word "acter" to describe what I thought my parents were saying about the young boy who played Oliver.

Later on I wanted to be a Dr. (To which my father, who often called me "stupid" replied that I was not smart enough. They learned much later that I was very smart, just had a learning disability, Dyslexia. I didn't learn to read until my 2nd time through the 3rd grade of Grammar School.

I loved art. I always excelled in it, so later on I wanted to be an artist, so I went to one of the best art colleges in the country, Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

I painted a series of paintings about lake legends of the world. You know, the Loch Ness "Monster" and all that. Actually, there are about 320 lakes all around the world in which weird phenonoma have been reported. So I had plenty of weird and wonderful inspiration. I showed in galleries around the country. It was mostly the mystery of the subject that brought people to my shows. No one hardly ever bought a painting, unless I sold it to them. I guess I was a pretty good sales person. I had to be there in person to do this, though, and travelling was not something my body (suffering from Lyme Disease) could deal with, so I hardly ever travelled. Hence, I was not overly famous or successful. However, I did have fun!
