Oh; and another thing!

After this post I saw my therapist and discussed this with her. She said it’s all very well for stuff like chemotherapy or a broken leg; but for emotional trauma it is not always applicable; tha some people develop behaviours they never overcome and weaknesses ; like becoming abusers. So no, she disagrees and said there are occasions where people need to be reminded they have life pretty good, 1st world problems etc, but that in my particular circumstance at least the issue is coming to terms with how bad things have been; and that it’s ok NOT to be strong about it . My guess would be what’s true for one person might apply to some others :) . No one is that special

I agree that what works for one person may not for another. I personally believe in Post Traumatic Growth, both because of the evidence and also my own personal experience of recovery from trauma. I was diagnosed with PTSD in 2007 as a result of multiple and complex traumas and defintely didn't go in thinking "Hey, what a gift. I'm going to grow from this". What happened along the way was that I decided that the dominant narrative that trauma defined a person and one would always be 'damaged' was not how I wanted to live my life. After 7 years of intensive therapy and daily dedication to healing all aspects of myself I reckon I'm now in a place where I can say "I'm pretty damn happy with life".

Post Traumatic Growth isn't for everyone and there a lot of variables but I think it's got to be on the table for consideration. Too often the so called 'experts' tell us that we won't recover and we take that message, hook, line and sinker. I reckon we can heal ourselves, the same that most things in nature can, if given the right conditions. From what I've learned, Post Traumatic Growth is not about being a 'superhuman' in the face of trauma, but rather about harnessing our true potential after adversity...and that's something I can get hooked on.

I believe in making lemonade from lemons.

But I also think it depends on the nature if the trauma and how things turn out afterwards? I think if I had restitution for example; I would feel faith in our society and humanity despite any personal lingering impact.

It's true Mee, we need to have faith and hope the be able to feel that the world is safe enough to thrive in. I'm sorry that you didn't receive restitution for the wrongs that happened and hope that you get to make lemonade one day too
