Working To Help People If You Need Help Yourself

My T says his biggest tool, to do good job, is just being himself. I think maybe that's true for lots o...
I would love to learn that, how to just be able to completely treat both areas as unrelated facts. Meaning, when you are faced with obvious triggers to treat that as an unrelated part of your own life. But most of the time when stuck at the job it is impossible.

He's says (because I asked) that it's not something they teach in 'therapist school' but they should. It's a skill he's had to learn. And I suspect he tells me stuff like that to encourage me to work on learning it too.

You have a right to be a different person personally and professionally,

Thank you @Ronin . I really needed to hear this. ...people who only know me in private often describe me as cold when they see me in work mood for the first time but your words make it all logical. :notworthy:

@Friday : Thank you, I'll try to keep that in mind. :)

@scout86 and @Freedomfighter : It is possible to learn. ...but I also had some educations about how to deal with heavy stuff - no personal triggers but still...it helps a lot.

As some of you might know, I work as a police officer. I don't perceive myself as the bad officer who is...

Someone once gave me great advice in this regard. They said, when you're tempted to do something for someone else ask yourself, "Who will this really help?" For example, when someone overshares personal information on your job and you're tempted to answer in kind, ask yourself if this would really help that person in some way, or if it would just be a relief to you to get it off your chest.

Personally I can be my better self if I'm helping/assisting others. Is it a compensation? Well I guess that supposes on which side you put your finger tip onto the scale. On the one hand, I can be of worth to others in spite of damage... on the other I can aspire to be more to others than I can for myself. I don't personally see either of those as particularly bad.

Wanted to say more... but lost it this morning as I was gonna do a larger reply before the site went down.

Totally, always in that position. I myself am embarking on a criminal justice career and it is tough to find the middle road when you yourself are suffering from PTSD.

It is harrowing what some people have to go through for sure and I myself also want to be able to help people within my chosen career path. I do understand how tough this is. But my therapist is helping to get me desensitized to such matters which is so tough.

I know that many people are ashamed of showing feelings, but I myself like to see people who show emotions instead of operating like robots. It shows that you are human.

I feel the same (with the exception of unless it's manipulative, or coercive, or threatening, or otherwise not above-board).
