To me it is just mindless violence that is affecting the lives of decent law abiding citizens. People have had their homes burnt out, businesses have been ruined, and police officers have been injured trying to 'keep' the peace. I have read the blog link, and I'm afraid I do not have any sympathy at all for those who are causing the riots, and participating in the violence.
It's just a pity that all London Police cells are now full, and it won't be long before surrounding Police cells, and those in the other areas hit by mindless violence are full to capacity. Our prisons are also already full to capacity, so these law breakers will no doubt get away with a slap on the wrist (no fines, because they claim poverty, despite owning expensive electrical goods and high priced fashions), and will be free to do it all again next week, next month, and next year.
2 females involved in the riots were interviewed by the BBC. They describe the events as fun. And "showing the rich people they can do what they want" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14458424
Shocking in my opinion - they just don't seem to have any idea what they are doing, or why, except to have a laugh . . . how is setting peoples homes, cars and businesses on fire 'fun'? It makes me embarrassed to call myself British at the moment.
My only sympathies lie with the innocent citizens who have had their homes and businesses ruined, in terrifying assaults and fire-bombs. And also with the Police, and Firefighters who have been risking their lives to maintain control over these situations.
Apart from the costs to humans well-being, this will no doubt have an impact on our already failing economy. There is nothing to gain.
I may be selfish, but I'm just very pleased that I wasn't at work last night when the riots hit the centre of Bristol, and I really hope that all will be quiet country wide tonight. There are now 16,000 Police Officers on the streets of London until Wednesday morning. Will that be enough?
Bearing in mind the so say reason for these riots is because a man was shot, during an arrest. The inquest into that mans death will not be heard until December. Armed Police were carrying out the arrest, suggesting there was cause for concern that the man might be carrying a weapon. The man was shot after an apparent exchange of fire with the Police officers. A police officer's radio was later found to have a bullet lodged in it. It was also confirmed that an illegal firearm was recovered from the scene.
I have little doubt that those involved in the riots, have no knowledge as to the reason why; they are more likely just enjoying the 'fun', (to quote the girls interviewed by the BBC) and getting a kick out of it. What a sorry state of affairs.
I can't afford a flat screen tv, but I don't go robbing one. Nor do I ever remember going to a free youth centre, when I was growing up. Being unemployed, and receiving free housing, having no bills, and receiving money from the government is not a reason to perform acts of violence against fellow citizens, IMO."When you think about, the right emotion to feel in some of the cases is just sadness and pity - kids robbing a flat screen TV when they see an opportunity to… because they know they’ll never be able to afford it." ....... "these kids rioting don’t see themselves having a future at all. They have been failed by society as a whole, they’ve been failed by the government cutting arts funding and closing youth centres, unemployment is rife to the point where even the ones desperately trying to seek work simply can’t find it" from [DLMURL="http://birminghamriots2011.tumblr.com/post/8662259640"]Birmingham Riots 2011: A few words.[/DLMURL]
Whilst I agree in sentiment, this just isn't going to happen. Sadly the majority of individuals involved in such mindless violence, are too frightening for citizens to confront. Many carry weapons, guns and knives, and would think nothing of using their weapons. It has been reported all too often in the past how members of the public trying to intervene in acts of violence have been hurt, injured and even killed. Numerous Police officers have been injured over the last few nights, which doesn't bode well for the individual citizen. Bearing in mind Police have 100% commitment from fellow officers, protective clothing (stab / bullet-proof vests, helmets, riot gear), and their own weapons (batons, CS spray, stun guns, and guns), that leaves a citizen feeling pretty helpless. Or at least it leaves me feeling pretty helpless. The men of London should band together and do a massive walkthrough of the areas, kicking these youths and vigilantes in the arse, arresting them for the police to deal with, as obviously police have politics at play, citizen arrests don't have the same politics to think about.
Whilst two wrongs don't make a right, sometimes citizens need to stand up and stop those who began something innocent and with a purpose, then got deviated to violence and destruction. Citizens have the power to stop citizens.
