News Wow - Poor London

To me it is just mindless violence that is affecting the lives of decent law abiding citizens. People have had their homes burnt out, businesses have been ruined, and police officers have been injured trying to 'keep' the peace. I have read the blog link, and I'm afraid I do not have any sympathy at all for those who are causing the riots, and participating in the violence.
"When you think about, the right emotion to feel in some of the cases is just sadness and pity - kids robbing a flat screen TV when they see an opportunity to… because they know they’ll never be able to afford it." ....... "these kids rioting don’t see themselves having a future at all. They have been failed by society as a whole, they’ve been failed by the government cutting arts funding and closing youth centres, unemployment is rife to the point where even the ones desperately trying to seek work simply can’t find it" from [DLMURL="http://birminghamriots2011.tumblr.com/post/8662259640"]Birmingham Riots 2011: A few words.[/DLMURL]
I can't afford a flat screen tv, but I don't go robbing one. Nor do I ever remember going to a free youth centre, when I was growing up. Being unemployed, and receiving free housing, having no bills, and receiving money from the government is not a reason to perform acts of violence against fellow citizens, IMO.

The men of London should band together and do a massive walkthrough of the areas, kicking these youths and vigilantes in the arse, arresting them for the police to deal with, as obviously police have politics at play, citizen arrests don't have the same politics to think about.
Whilst two wrongs don't make a right, sometimes citizens need to stand up and stop those who began something innocent and with a purpose, then got deviated to violence and destruction. Citizens have the power to stop citizens.
Whilst I agree in sentiment, this just isn't going to happen. Sadly the majority of individuals involved in such mindless violence, are too frightening for citizens to confront. Many carry weapons, guns and knives, and would think nothing of using their weapons. It has been reported all too often in the past how members of the public trying to intervene in acts of violence have been hurt, injured and even killed. Numerous Police officers have been injured over the last few nights, which doesn't bode well for the individual citizen. Bearing in mind Police have 100% commitment from fellow officers, protective clothing (stab / bullet-proof vests, helmets, riot gear), and their own weapons (batons, CS spray, stun guns, and guns), that leaves a citizen feeling pretty helpless. Or at least it leaves me feeling pretty helpless.

It's just a pity that all London Police cells are now full, and it won't be long before surrounding Police cells, and those in the other areas hit by mindless violence are full to capacity. Our prisons are also already full to capacity, so these law breakers will no doubt get away with a slap on the wrist (no fines, because they claim poverty, despite owning expensive electrical goods and high priced fashions), and will be free to do it all again next week, next month, and next year.

2 females involved in the riots were interviewed by the BBC. They describe the events as fun. And "showing the rich people they can do what they want" http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14458424
Shocking in my opinion - they just don't seem to have any idea what they are doing, or why, except to have a laugh . . . how is setting peoples homes, cars and businesses on fire 'fun'? It makes me embarrassed to call myself British at the moment.

My only sympathies lie with the innocent citizens who have had their homes and businesses ruined, in terrifying assaults and fire-bombs. And also with the Police, and Firefighters who have been risking their lives to maintain control over these situations.

Apart from the costs to humans well-being, this will no doubt have an impact on our already failing economy. There is nothing to gain.

I may be selfish, but I'm just very pleased that I wasn't at work last night when the riots hit the centre of Bristol, and I really hope that all will be quiet country wide tonight. There are now 16,000 Police Officers on the streets of London until Wednesday morning. Will that be enough?

Bearing in mind the so say reason for these riots is because a man was shot, during an arrest. The inquest into that mans death will not be heard until December. Armed Police were carrying out the arrest, suggesting there was cause for concern that the man might be carrying a weapon. The man was shot after an apparent exchange of fire with the Police officers. A police officer's radio was later found to have a bullet lodged in it. It was also confirmed that an illegal firearm was recovered from the scene.

I have little doubt that those involved in the riots, have no knowledge as to the reason why; they are more likely just enjoying the 'fun', (to quote the girls interviewed by the BBC) and getting a kick out of it. What a sorry state of affairs.

This is just another example of why I HATE this country and moved abroad. It's gone to the dogs and it's getting worse!

I just happened to fly back here for 2 weeks on Sunday and it just makes me glad that my kids are not being raised here and it makes me ashamed to say I'm British!

Where has the pride gone?

My Husband was a Police officer in the UK and I hated how dangerous his job was (another contributing factor as to why we left). They have very little power now, they have to be very careful in how they deal with situations otherwise they can lose their job for doing their job, I mean, WTF??

I blame the parents. There are too many who just don't care about what their children get up to. The laws need a radical reform with harsher punishments put into place. But then where does the prison space come from? Easy... Capitol punishment!

Murderers, rapists etc. basically all those who are way past rehabilitation and are never going to be useful to society, just get rid of them and stop wasting tax payers money on keeping them in prison!

Watching the news this morning, and people are asking why the military have not been brought in yet. Well... as an ex-soldier, I can tell you why the military are not brought into it yet; because police are trained vastly different to handle civilians, military are not trained to handle civilians, they are trained to achieve the objective, regardless how it is done.

Police use lethal force as a last resort, military are trained to use it as their primary function.

Whilst in one breathe I will say, yes, send in the military as the police cannot control it, in the other I will say, the news and civilians need to then accept what they will get shown by the media of how vastly different the military will handle the situation compared to how the police are. It will be stronger violence against violence, that is what WILL occur when you engage the military to remove the problem.

Civilians are not typically good with this, and police shooting a youth is what started this ball rolling to begin with. What the military will do will be far more severe... so be careful what you ask for IMHO.

There is a movie with Bruce Willis in it, cannot remember the name, but he warned them of the same results... and those depicted results are accurate. The military don't have compassion or empathy, they will line people up, they will treat them as criminals / the enemy, they will stop the problem until the aim is met, regardless how they must do it.

I've been following this sense it hit the news circuit internationally, and I wasn't exactly sure why I had taken so much interest in what's going on in London right now, but I've realized how it mirrors so much of what's happening here in the states; well, minus the riots so far.

IMHO this has nothing to do with the young man who was shot, who btw did not have a replica gun, it was real. This violence has been under the surface with many youth today.
I've been reading so many different things about what’s going on and from what I know they're still investigating. There are some news outlets stating the bullets found were police issued and there are some stating that[DLMURL="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/09/mark-duggan-police-ipcc"] IPCC believes Mark duggan hadn't fired a weapon at all.[/DLMURL]

The shooting was just a catalyst.

I'm with you on this KP, and it's a poor excuse to use the death of this man to steel candy and flat screen TV’s; flipping over cars and burning down buildings. The family did essential hold a protest but have sense ceased, this riot is much larger then Mark Duggan. And yet there are so many variables happening here, There are some rioters who are looting claiming social justice for the haves and the have not’s and some who are trying to turn this in to a race and class issue when really this has escalated so far a way from any political or social agenda Its just unjustified violence now.

I'm Pulling for the safety of all of you today.

I suggested to my H, the police use water cannons with an ultra violet marker in the water. The police then spend the next few weeks using light to find these feral rats.

It surprises me that Cameron hasn't called for military back up yet? Do you think it would have lasted as long as it has if he did? Water cannons are a great idea, I’m still really unsure as to how they've calmed down rioters so far.

Edit: Questions answered by anthony's previous post.

Just rand in to this article that made me think of the quote above:
With a show of force and prayer, London fights back

Exactly what is needed....

There is strength in numbers, and when you have more people who do the right thing vs. the wrong (rioters), then Londoners can take back their streets and neighbourhoods themselves from these youths. Power from people surpasses Governments, let alone a small group of rioters in the scheme of the population of London.

We dont have vast nos of armed forces left in the country to put on the ground, they're too thinly stretched due to overseas deployment and redundancies.
Anthony is also correct,I don't think any of the feckless parents who have let thier kids drag themselves up would approve of the way the army would handle this, therefore it is upto communities to "have a word"with said useless parents and get these feral brats at home.
We need age related curfews in this country and to bring back disciplin in the schools and homes.
Prosecute the parents I say.

Prosecute the parents I say

Definately, if they don't care about what their kids are up to, make them by prosecuting them too!

I don't think the Army will ever be drafted in, the main reason is that the government then has to admit that they've lost control of the country and that's political suicide!
