Wow - The Apa Really Got The New Ptsd Diagnosis Right

I really dislike believing that I have PTSD. Unfortunately, when I read this it reminds me of exactly what I am suffering from. Trauma can really hurt one's life.

For how long have you had it? The reason why I am asking it is because I recently learned about the diagnosis myself not too long ago and I really DISLIKE believing this also. I stand by you 100%. Trauma can really hurt one's life completely.

So this is stating that it wont be called C-PTSD anymore? It will be under the same category of PTSD but with more definite statements and symptoms, if I'm correct?
Firstly, there never was a diagnosis called CPTSD. It doesn't exist. It is a perpetuated submission that never had any actual criterion. There is no diagnosis, in other words. People use the term, but it isn't a diagnosis.

Second, this diagnosis will be the first time complex trauma is recognised. Yes, it will now have an actual official diagnosis, due to item one, CPTSD not existing.

I think the terms CPTSD and Combat PTSD are often used by professionals, not to define it in accurate diagnostic terms to their clients, but to define it by the PTSD being caused by either complex trauma, or combat trauma.

Mental health professionals have known for some time that complex trauma exists, so it's used to seperately identify this for the cause of the PTSD, as opposed to someone who has PTSD caused by a one off event such as a car accident.

I don't think it makes them any the less professional or knowledgeable in the field of PTSD. Although there does seem to be a fair amount of wrongly diagnosing PTSD, but that's the same with most mental disorders. Just my little old opinion though!;)

Is that a conversation you would welcome? If so, what is the best part of these forums to start a thread in?
You can start any conversation you choose... just put it in the forum that best describes the threads topic, is all. That sounds like a PTSD Discussion based on what you outlined. If you worded it as more a debate, then the debate forum would be better.

All very plausible as a diagnosis.

The Devil's Advocate could say:

1) It helps very little about a cure.
2) It sort of implies that people react the same way to stress. When it is critical, perhaps they do, but after awhile people react differently. (I think people act differently at critical stress.)

But it is the system.

Wow, that really is much improved from the DSM IV-TR! (You know you've studied psychology when...)
I think I'm as excited about the new publication just as much as my favourite psych prof is, now, and I'm not even a psych student anymore! (was doing a History/Psych major/minor - now doing engineering)

This is a complete, robust solution to cover all abnormal trauma now, due for mid 2013 release.
Thank you for this, Anthony. Very interesting.

Have they kept the occurrence requirements the same? In other words how often there are intrusive experiences or flashbacks or how much depersonalisation etc. Just curious.
