I wasn't particularly a fan of Harry Potter, but when my daughter (now 10) was 7, nearing her 8th birthday, she requested a Harry Potter book for her birthday. Because she has Autism, she was unable to read anything on her own. She was given the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone, for her birthday when she turned 8. She was then given books 2 and 3 for Christmas that year and by that time had begun to catch onto reading. When she was 8.5, it was around Easter time and she was in Year 3, she was given books 4 and 5 and was nearly finished book 3.

By the time we got to book 3, she'd caught onto basic reading and I'd developed a love of Harry Potter, as had my daughter. By the time we'd finished book 3, she was able to read chapter for chapter with me. She read book 4 to me each night, reading 2 chapters per night without me needing to help out too much at all other than remind her of other things that had taken places in previous books or chapters.

When she was 9, she wanted a Harry Potter themed birthday party, which is what I chose to do for her. So last year she had that. It was great, fantastic, soooo much fun! For her birthday I bought her Harry Potter 6, and gave her a HP themed birthday party where she dressed up as Hermione and I dressed up as Bellatrix. We had a great time. It was amazing. I'd since bought some of the movies and had put on layby movies 6 and 7 along with book 7 for Christmas last year. I'm so glad I did because they were still on layby at the time we'd been broken into and robbed last November, which meant she had those still on layby and still available to her.

Anyway, that's where my username comes from. It's from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkeban which is my daughter's favourite book and favourite movie. It's not my favourite, but it's where one of my favourite characters was introduced which shows a great example of humanity and what we stand for. So that's what I chose for my username.

I am a big Harry Potter fan myself. :)

I remember when my mother bought me the first book. It was an amazing book cover for a kid of my age at the time, all busy and new. I was fascinated. But I wasn't a big reader at the time so I didn't end up reading the book until later.

Now I read them about once a year.

These books have taught many a child to read, they are great :)

She was a single mum living in poverty at the time of writing them, very inspirational woman.

Wow. Think I might leave this forum. Have fun guys, sorry I couldn't stick around. Hopefully there's another one to get support from :(

I'm sorry @Padfoot. I thought your daughter's story was great, and you are a great parent.

I'm not the brightest star in the sky, but I don't understand from this thread what kind of support you need. Please, don't leave. I'm sure you will get what you need as soon as we find out what you need.
