Things That Make You Feel At Home?

What makes you feel at home?

I have this old dish towel that I got from my parents. It was around when I was a kid, and I am in my mid-sixties. I guess that makes it an antique! I love this thing and whenever I use it, it reminds me of my parents and being in the kitchen when I was a kid.

(I was abused sexually by a grandfather, so my parents were always very dear to me, and I miss them so, now that they are gone. They put a stop to what my grandfather did to me when they discovered it and banished him from our house forever after that).

So anyway, this dish towel makes me feel at home and happy whenever I see it or use it.

I was thinking that there must be things in your homes that make you feel at home. Or maybe a special kind of music or a special time of year or the smell of cooking or a special type of weather or whatever.

What makes you feel at home? What makes you comfortable, relaxed, content and in general feel really good even if you experience it in someone else's home?

I like that question. It's a great one. Books make me feel at home. Growing up my brother and I shelves teaming with books, my mom worked at the library so we were often there wither her, and even my parents could be seen reading from time to time. I love seeing shelves of books- makes me feel more comfortable at other places as well.

Also, I have this bookcase my dad handmade for me. It has two little cabinets with heart-shaped windows and my initials carved into the top. It has moved everywhere with me. I got it in two parts and it is huge. I've had it at least since I was 10. It has traveled from that house to two other childhood homes, several apartments when I was single, and has now become a centerpiece in the homes my husband and I have had. We keep DVDs on it and an array of family photos. Family photos are another thing that make me feel at home because I grew up with their always being family photos displayed.

Yes, I have family photos in my kitchen by the table I eat at. I hate eating alone, so that is the next best thing to eating with family. I've been meaning to ask my niece and nephew for up to date photos of them. I have old family photos of my parents and husband and so on, but none of either of them since they graduated high school and college. They are both in their thirties now, so I think it is time for some updated photos! Thanks for the reminder.

There was a lady I used to visit and her home smelled just like my grandmother's did. I loved going to visit her for that reason and others too. I always felt at home in her home. She herself made me feel at home too, just by her hospitality and willingness to listen and converse. She left me her dining room set in her will when she died, but since my husband had refinished ours and it was precious to me, I turned hers down. It sounded to me like her relatives were reluctant to give it to me anyway, so I felt I was doing the right thing by leaving it to them instead. I was touched that she would leave it to me though, as that had always been where she and I sat to talk and share our memories and thoughts.

I pour my coffee by hand into a number 2 filter and a Melitta one cup holder for the filter. I have a special 2 cup lined with stainless steel coffee mug that came from Russia. It takes time to make a really good cup of coffee, but the coffee is so good, much better than Starbuck's or MacDonald's. I also filter the water, using a Britta filter. All this takes me about a half an hour to do, but it is well worth the time and effort. I love my morning coffee and it makes me feel so at home.

There is an old saying, "Home is where the heart is." and I do feel that home really is supposed to feel that way for us.

What can you do today to help yourself feel more at home?

I have wind chimes that I had to replace from the moves. I have things from our travels when my husband was alive. Rock collections, fairy collections, I miss my driftwood and burls and sea shells I used to have from beach combing with my husband.
