Thanks for this thread. Today l just realized l don't startle and l don't hyperventilate. That ended apparently. I have really increased my exercise, and l have more happy thoughts then l have had in a long time despite being broke due to bad divorce delay. So hope does exist for us ptsd sufferers. :)

Bloomy that was so lovely <3!! It really warmed my heart to read - thanks for sharing! :)!

I love dogs too! I walk some part-time and they always make me laugh, feel kind of safe and happy! I can't wait to have my own one day :)!

Hi everyone :)! I have a few questions about PTSD that I wondered if you lovely, knowledgeable people...
My best advice in regard to beginning your recovery process is to minimize stress and triggering situations in your life. Just try the two things first. Start small. Be ok with having a setback. It may or will happen and that's ok because you are trying. Start writing 5 daily positive affirmations to yourself every morning. This starts your day off in a positive way. The more positive you can remain the better things seem to go! I am in the process of healing and recovery now as well and these are a few things I am doing for me. Remember the best thing you can do is own your journey and be the best YOU that you can be!

Yea! exactly, as I always say, if we can find one positive thing out of every day, we have achieved a lot, good luck.

I'm primarily on this site as a Supporter, but I also have PTSD that is mostly in remission. After spending over a decade (~1984-1996) doing various types of therapy, after six months of EMDR in 1996, I "graduated" from therapy.

Since then, I've been completely free of the most devastating symptoms, including flashbacks and constantly thinking about the abuse. Most days I'm pretty okay, and some days I'm great. There's a lot more to PTSD recovery than relief of symptoms, especially if the trauma was ongoing. Trauma messes with the way you see yourself and interact with the world. Once the symptoms aren't overwhelming, there's a lot of work to be done. Some say the work begins once the symptoms are at bay. I suspect that work will take a lifetime...

I suspect I'm always going to be more susceptible to being retraumatized by experiences (I've had a couple of instances). However, today I usually feel stable and secure in myself. People wouldn't look at me and think I have PTSD, i.e. I'm no longer an obvious basket case. I can handle most things thrown at me. Before my current relationship with someone who has active PTSD, I rarely even thought of it. I echo much of what's been said about taking care of yourself and having a toolbox to help manage life.

Doing the work can feel and be all-consuming, but you can get to the other side. I think I've come out of it a better, stronger person with experiences to share and hopefully help others. I'm still far from perfect and have my own struggles, but they're nothing like when I was in the thick of it. I wish you the best of luck on your journey.
