Assault Service dog and i were attacked tonight

Hope that the owner is tracked down and I'd be hoping to find info for witnesses for a lawsuit for damages to your computer and your service dog's vet bills at the very least. Hope that you remember to get a copy of the police report and a card with the officer's name and badge number and please do follow up with animal control. If they can find owner and dog they are the best avenue to pursue to insure this doesn't happen again.

So far as your thoughts up thread about "I did everything wrong"... Please try to remind yourself that you did all you could, as you could at THAT time?

So very sorry this happened gal. I hope things work out and that dog and owner are ID'd and evaluated.

I did not sleep much. (My PTSD brain thinks sleep is optional.) I got through work this morning. I am so used to having my dog at my side, it was weird and hard to go without her. A friend took care of my dog while I was at work because her foot kept bleeding. It has stopped, and she is being her normal bouncy self.

Animal Control came by this afternoon. There are all the normal dog attack concerns, and in my state, interfering with a service dog is an additional criminal act, even if no one is injured. So they appear to be taking it pretty seriously... maybe? I don't know. The Animal Control officer checked out my dog. She was so good with him. He even said so, but he probably says that about most dogs. He said it could have been so much worse. I agree. He told me they are going to do extra patrols to see if they can spot the dog and/or it's handler. That is surprising to me. He assured me no harm will come to the other dog if they find it. They will just seek to do quarantine for the 10 days, pay costs, and require training "so the owner and the dog can have a safe and successful future together." I like that! A bit of compassionate common sense.

A friend told me Animal Control will look really bad if another attack happens to a service dog that is more serious. That kind of stuff tends to make the papers, and if there is a record of attacks in the area, they will look extra bad.... so it could be possible they actually are taking it seriously and actually are going to do an extra patrol.

I asked the Animal Control Officer to read my letter to make sure it wasn't weird to leave it on neighbors doors, and he was totally ok with it. I'm going to wait another day before I do anything. My the current draft of the letter educates people about service dogs (stuff like - please don't pet the dog without asking) and explains why it's so important to always be able to have control over any dog, and gives resources to low cost training classes at the Humane Society in town. I didn't put anything in there about my specific disability or my name. It's just signed "your neighbor" with the number to Animal Control.

I'm trying to see this as a chance to educate people so life is easier for me and another neighbor in my building who also has a service dog, and for everyone else with dogs....

I wish my hands would stop shaking. I grew up on a farm, had to break up pig fights and various things from time to time. It wasn't fun, but it was just part of farm life. We doted on our livestock, but stuff can still happen now and then. This spooked me.

Everyone from the meeting I missed last night has been ok about it. Very understanding.

I'm headed off to a class, and I'm going to take my pup with me this time. Vet said it was ok.

We are going to walk down a different street.

I'm so glad your dog is doing so much better. And you, too, for going off to class in spite of it all!

Also very glad Animal Control is taking this so seriously. I'm sure your letter to your neighbors is very good and it is great that you are alerting them to this. I hope they find that owner. She really needs some training. And a harness can't hurt, either. I think a harness is actually better for an excitable dog. I got one for Misha shortly after I rescued her because she would strain against the lease so strongly and wind up kind of choking. Ish.

So sorry for your pain and sad about your lovely baby. It seems to me you could go to complex she came out of and talk to manager of building. It's a serious liability issue if her dog attacks someone in that apartment even if she doesn't live there. You could possibly go with animal control, or copy of police report. This would be helpful to get reimbursed for your personal costs, l know it doesn't cover emotional costs. I am so grateful that you kept it together, and handle the situation so well. I am not sure l would have done the right things you did. Have you considered pepper spray at this point, it would have hurt the dog's eyes maybe. I was thinking carry a cane but dog still may attack. Also, bring a copy of vet's intake sheet to manager. Hope something helped here. I am so glad you are healing along with your special friend.

Also, see if she has taken her dog to same vet. It seems if it is a dog with a license, the city dog licensing dept , maybe able to track down dogs at that address, if you show reports, otherwise attorney has to subpoena and possibly write a demand letter.

You all have such great ideas! I'm exhausted but taking notes. Will write more tomorrow. I like the harness suggestion and talking to the manager. I bought a brand of pepper spray that is made specifically to be a dog detterant. I was so glad to find it tonight, and at a store just down the street! I was still scared, so I also got a cane to carry with me. I went down a different street, but I could see where it happened and I was scared. With the spray in my hand, I started to relax. I'm so exhausted I can't think or type, but wanted to say thank you lots!

So good to hear this. You are thinking so clearly which is healthy for both you and your friend. Last suggestion, camera, did anybody have a Video camera aimed that way? Best of luck, you sound in control.

I just got done with work and called the apartment manager. I think there might be two others I have to reach out too. He has already talked with animal control and is upset about what happened too. He wants me to give him my letter so he can email it out (possibly edited) to all his residents in a "clear and directive manner." He said he would give a copy to me of what he sends out and fully support my giving out my own letter too!

This is so helpful. It's nice to know that Animal Control did talk to him as well.

I'm not used to anyone helping protect me and my dog like this...

I'm double checking all my facts and info to send on to him. I expect he will take out a lot but that's ok. He knows his renters and sending any message will help.

You've done well. You've taken care of your dog, you and your neighbors too. I'm sorry this happened, I really am. No one should go through this, and for someone that can't control their dog, they shouldn't have one.

You have exhibited strength throughout this, even though you were scared. Anyone would have been. You did an awesome job and everything you should have done!!!,

I was walking to a class tonight. A dog ran down the street and attacked my service dog and myself....
How horrible for you and your animal friend. I had to deal with emergency personnel too a couple of days ago and that also freaked me out, but for someone that does not have control over a possibly dangerous animal I have no sympathy for.

Whatever you do only try to think about your own health and your dog's health, that is all that matters. I have stopped walking around in my neighborhood too, because there are some very questionable people out there, believe me. It is not safe anymore, way too many wackos out in the streets.
