If You Could Control the Law Enforcement, What Would You Do?

Hiya all.

This subject has been bugging me for a while now.

I was wondering, if you was in a place of power to control the law how would you deal with criminals?

At the moment in the uk a man found guilty of rape for the first time gets a verbal warning and is released. The second time he is put in jail for little over a year. sometimes a few monthes.

What would you do to perverts, rapists and child molesters?

I no exactly what i would do! I would hang them or shoot them like China, Iran, Iraq etc.

This country claims we are better then those countrys because we dont kill our citizens. But down to the truth of the matter.

Who wants to be sat next to a child rapist on the bus wheather they have done time in jail or not!

It is putting us victims more at risk letting those sickos walking free!

Am i a bad person for wanting this way of life? to kill these people to make our countrys safer. And if these people realised they caught die as a result it would deture people from doing the crime.

I should think Iran is a very safe place for women, unlike rip off Britian.

What are your thoughts?:dontknow:

That is not my experience of living in the UK. Although, admittedly I do believe rape is not taken as seriously as it should be.

Not true. Women in the Middle East are generally treated like garbage - second-class citizens at best. A woman is often blamed for the rape she suffered, and in many "courts" her testimony is equal to only 1/3 of a man's...meaning she must have 3 witnesses or accounts to his 1. Under Iran's civil code, marital rape is not a crime. Abuse, even severe abuse, is part of the culture and "normal." If a battered woman were to call the police, it's unlikely they would intervene. Most of them also enjoy very few "privileges" like going to school, leaving the house unescorted, and choosing who they will marry.

My perspective on the question you posed is that current punishments for most crimes are not harsh enough. The police/law enforcement are not the problem. They do their jobs, and then hand criminals over to the legal system. It's the legal system that's the problem. By the time it's all said and done, the sentences meted out are hardly befitting the crime. On top of that, criminals are eligible for parole way too soon. Often it seems that white collar crimes, like stealing money, are punished much more harshly than violent crimes, like murder.

I do agree that we should have more capital punishment. In my state, there was recently a bill to strike it down; it was defeated :thumbs-up. However, there are still very few criminals put to death anywhere in the US relative to the crime statistics. Personally, I think if rapists and child molestors and such aren't going to be killed, they should at least be castrated. Take away their ability to get an erection, and I wonder how likely they would be to commit sexual crimes again.

Well, this one is deep.

It's a pretty sensitive subject for me, as I have been failed by the justice system in my country twice. Also, it is easy for me to say "Kill all the rapists" because I've been a victim and have to live with the effects everyday.

Part of me thinks killing them would be a good idea, but then their pain and suffering is ended, and mine continues. I have a hard time with that as well.

I've also thought along the lines of Mina's last statement, where castrating them seemed liek a good idea, but the truth is that most rapes are not about sex at all, but are and act of violence and degredation. I believe that if rapists were castrated, and set free on society that they would likely find other ways of degrading women...using objects to rape, more extreme violence...ect.

Also, commenting on the justice system in other countries, especially in the Middle East is pretty pointless, as we do not know what really goes on in those countries, and all we have to go on is what the media feeds us. I don't think we're getting an accurate story there...

I wish I had a good answer for this question. There are holes in every solution, but for now, I think longer prison terms and stricter laws about these types of crimes is the only way to go.

Interesting, and moving topic..thanks.

I too think that castration is NOT the answer. Rape is about power, and degradation. Luthien is right, the animals would only use something else to accomplish their deed.

I really don't know what the answers are. Jail, ok, so they spend the rest of their life in jail, and the taxpayers pay for them.....Death, their misery ends, and the victims continues.....Maybe having them being raped a few times would work...Who knows????

I was just re-reading my last post, and realising that I should have said "I believe that if rapists were castrated, and set free on society that they would likely find other ways of degrading their victims...using objects to rape, more extreme violence...ect."

It doesn't just happen to women, and I know that. I was thinking in terms of myself there, and didn't mean to offend anyone by only including women as victims.

Also, I don't believe having rapists raped as punsihment is such a good idea. I mean it does sound fair, but I think it would only stand to increase the problem by making them angry, shameful, and more likely to strike out at others...

Here in NewZealand we have had a case where cops have used their power and raped, from memory one accused got 5years but then eligible for parole in 2years time. We are fighting our justice system to get it right, harsher sentences and NO parole would be a good start.

What i dont get is how the lawers who defend a guilty person can sleep at night.

Maybe it is time to bring back stocks and shame these people, let the public see who they are, have our rotten eggs and tomatoes ready.

Maybe get rid of all the do gooders, victims have less privilages than the perpetrators.

I definately believe that rapists, child molesters and murderers should get LIFE.

Complex Issue

What a good question. And the responses coming in from around the world leave me to one conclusion.... The laws aren't tough enough or comprehensive enough. Certainly in the middle east laws are staunch, but women continue to experience marital rape- and it's not even considered a crime.

Women need to be empowered throughout society more, part of the law making decisions, part of law enforcement, part of the justice system in general.

As someone with a degree in Women's Studies and a specialization in the study of violence against women, I think that there is a bit of a glamorization of "rape" and "violence" that is all to prevelant in society at large, certainly this is true in the USA, but we are not alone in this problem.

There is a stigma attached to women who are angry about this issue-- some of the really good organizations that are out there doing some great work are labeled some ugly names "Femi-nazi, etc". This silences women into a state of fear to some degree to express the outrage that we all have.

Rape and the culture of rape is a form of terrorism... Sexual terrorism. It's a complex issue, with complex solutions.
