The DV advocate who runs a weekly support group pissed me off yesterday.

I don't go weekly. Maybe once a month, when I can get out of work early enough. The pizza place across the street brings garlic bread and bottles of wine. Sheesh, we need it. One of the other women is an AF vet and a Sheriff's Deputy. We're becoming friends.

I normally don't share much. Last night, however, I explained that the first time Gary became physically abusive was as a result of a spat about my shorts during the summer of 2013. It was completely ludicrous. I was about to go out with him to meet up with some people, and he thought my shorts were too short. Instead of changing, I pointed out that he was being controlling and possessive and he shouldn't care because I was going to be with him. It's not like I was going out in Daisy Dukes with a bunch of girl friends. It escalated. He brought up old shit and flew into a rage when I turned to walk away from him.That was only the first time he picked me up by the neck and slammed me against the wall until I was sitting in drywall.

DV Advocate: "Do you see how you could have handled it more diplomatically? Maybe you contributed to his outburst."

All of the women there proceeded to jump down her throat.

DV Advocate: "Maybe your shorts were a little provocative."

All of the women there jumped down her throat again.

The 1940's called. They want their opinions about women's clothing and where blame should fall back. Seriously, who decided she should run the group?

It's the great contradiction to be sure, to have to feel as though you are doing things right by seeing someone and it ends up falling back on you anyway. It's a shit sandwich. At this point I'm angrier about the fact that he's involving me in his decision to become a debt-dodging bum. He claims to want me out of his life completely, but his actions speak otherwise. If he truly wanted to disengage then he would have refinanced the car he kept or come up with some sort of arrangement with the financial institution in order to get me out of the picture. I am *still* having to deal with his bullshit, and now he's dragged other people into it because a repo man showed up at my boyfriend's mother's house looking for that car.

Yeah, I read what happened and it's kinda common with an asshole who just wants to bleed on you. I had to keep telling myself to just walk away, don't burn any bridges when I got a divorce and it turned out to be the right way to go.

You may have to just get a lawyer. I know it costs money but it tells the SOB to lay off, period. I do think there should be a way to get your name off that title and loan. Maybe send a copy of the divorce papers with the settlement agreement to the credit company. If they repo'ed it might be too late but at least it might prevent a credit ding. Which by the way can be overcome. You can appeal any ding to your credit, use the documentation as a reason, and they can remove it.

I'd get a lawyer anyway but this can be overcome. When you do, everything is behind you. Good luck.

I spoke to a couple lawyers, and unfortunately short of him refinancing the car--basically getting a new loan in his name to pay off the old one--there's not much I can do short of declaring bankruptcy.There's no way to just take my name off the loan paperwork.

The problem is that I don't feel like being sued for the debt, or the remainder of the debt after the car is repo'd and it's auctioned for half its trade-in value. There's still about $20,000 left to be paid on that loan.

If you do the right thing and voluntarily surrender it then make sure you get a written statement that the bank absolves the rest of the debt or else they can still sue you for it.
