I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Hefner.

He was a TITAN in the civil rights movement, more than a decade before the civil rights movement! Advocating, publishing about, lobbying ($$$) for equal rights for women (not just legal, but also sexual and reproductive health, during decades that not only was abortion illegal but only married women were allowed to be prescribed contraceptives, and even then only with their husbands approval), equal rights for all races (for decades supporting black leaders, artists/comedians/actors/writers... Taking huge flak during segregation for his anti-segregationist views, policies, & politics), anti-censureship/freedom of the press (not talking nipples so much as thoughts and ideas that disagreed with social norms. He published a huge number of authors first books, turned down by every other publisher, because of their inflammatory content. Some pun inteneded, Fahrenheit 451, by Bradbury being an example of type). Most of the causes he championed? We consider basic human rights, today.

By his works alone, he was truly a great man. Great men are often evil bastards, on a personal level, and yet by virtually all accounts of those who knew him well? He was also a really decent human being. Kind, brave, loyal, a bit shy, & honest as the day is long.

Yes, I have a great deal of respect for both the man, and his works.

I think I'm one of the only people who bought Playboy for the articles. That magazine, which I have major issues with on several levels, revolutionized journalism. And they helped lead getting the truth about hiv out when the Reagan administration was still claiming it was nothing to worry about. Heffner? Don't like him in the least. His daughter? Great regard. The abuse the women within the clubs endured was inexcusable. Pulling America out of Victoria-ism was a good thing. Lots of conflicting thoughts and feelings.
