Crying causing severe/debilitating headaches

hello,

I am afraid to cry, though sometimes I have to anyway, because it causes such horrible headaches that I cannot function, and sometimes breathing or eating is not easy.

Ibuprofen seems to help, most of the time.

Severe headaches are inconveniently also a trigger for me.

Does this happen to anyone else? Does anyone know what causes it?

When I cry I immediately start looking for pain relief. My service dog carries some now. Is there another way to go about this?

Thank you

that sounds awful littleoc, sorry you suffer with this. I started getting migraine headaches at fourteen, just after my trauma. Typically in my right temple/eye. I get sensitive to light and sound and it can be debilitating as you said. I use imitrex pills, injections and oxycodone to relieve the pain. Along with those medications my neurologist also prescribed a preventative medication like neurontin or gabapentin.

I really relate to your post because last night along with the crying and no sleep I got one...I still have it actually. I have taken what I can and am just lying in bed. Sorry littleoc I don't know why crying can bring on a headache or migraine. I know caffeine, alcohol, no sleep or food can all cause me to get a migraine. Also stress and worry.

I've never looked to see if I have migraines. Maybe I should check somehow. It gets in my eyes and temples too. Also on the very top of my head -- not from grinding teeth (I don't) but I think it's in the spot I got bashed once. It seems like it. I can't remember if it hurt there before or not.

Maybe I should check. Migraines and PTSD seem to have similar neurological things going on. Last I saw.

I keep thinking it's tension headaches but I'm not sure. Doctors have disagreed but then I just say "but ibuprofen helps" because I used to think that disproved it.

Thank you. I hope you get some rest @MrMoonlight and I hope your head gets some relief

Crying gives me migranes. I take Exedrine migrane stuff for mine (the dose is two pills but I take 3 if it's bad). It's pretty helpful for me. Best of luck finding a solution

I think there are lots of reasons crying causes headaches, dehydration is a really simple reason (and yes I’ve cried to the point of dehydration), so drink as much as you can. I think sometimes too the energy release or stress that we’ve been holding can lead to pain. Can you head it off at the pass by taking pain relief before you start crying/feel the pain coming?

Yes, and often I do. It seems to be effective. I haven't tried drinking more water. That seems like an easy thing to do, so next time I'll drink a bunch of water and see if that helps. It would be cheaper if it does :P

does sleep help yours, or would you wake up in pain if you didn't take the pills?

Does ibuprofen not work for you? (I ask because it seems to work for me -- I'm wondering if that disqualifies it as being migraine, though I'm slowly becoming aware that there are many causes to migraines)
