Brain games... and ptsd

MyPTSD Pro
Hello hello

I recently started BrainHQ which was prescribed for rehab. The doctor was saying thoughts get all messy because brain is not processing situations due to whatever reason. Such as sound identification if weak could contribute to me freaking out from random noises because brain cannot categorize the sound. The default mode is survival mode.

This made me wonder if cognitive games can help us so we can process our arousal trigger activation inputs from PTSD. Respond instead of react?

For example, "Elevate – a cognitive training tool to build communication and analytical skills (Elevate, 2014)" (NCBI, 2016).

Would games like this help PTSD be more managable?

For myself, I lose the ability to think and speak when activated. I am using Elevate for TBI rehab also and wonder how or if it will help me communicate and process situations.

What do you think?

Makes sense on a number of levels - the thing that comes to mind for me right off the bat is, practicing focus. Any kind of 'brain-game' is going to require that one employ the neuro tools required to focus on a thing, which is directly tied to mentally eliminating distractions.

Many of the PTSD symptom sets could be described as very strong distractions. And (nearly? all?) of the cognitive management tools we are taught to employ require focus (at varying degrees of difficulty).

I know that there are a few thinking-type games that help me manage PTSD symptoms, just by playing them. There's that, too.

How my counselor explained is that ptsd changes the wiring in the brain and primal survival areas get more juice than normal people without ptsd.

The brain games tap into reorganizing the wires and connections to the higher brain to process and assess faster.
If i think of it that way it makes sense why I blow my fuse so easily because of wiring.

Brain games help but i do get very tired afterwards

I was suggested to try BrainHQ which few months ago. I finally got a subsctiption. I see the improvement in processing speed. I do really well on alert games and suck on memory.

The other i really like is called Elevate Brain.

Good news, the science is totally sound, and it's tested on good metrics.
Innovations in the field of neurology often come from outside the field itself. For example, the Wii balance sensors, for $220 at the time, were better than the top of the line French balance machine which cost $220000.

(My dad's a neurologist who goes to a lot of conferences. I've grown up around this stuff.)

Now I'm a graphic designer. So, I looked into their design process too. Basically as a designer you do what you're told. If the target is to optimize the brainwaves, the game that can do this the best, and any improvements to said game, are the ones that get approved by your bosses and make it to market.

So yeah, looks pretty rad.
