I'm sorry that has happened to you, @HealingInProcess and I hope you can find a church where the leaders inspire you instead of mess with you! I have experienced in one church where I had a PTSD Service dog with me and was refused entrance. However, the church I do go to has more than made up for that. So each church is unique. Keep looking, keep searching and asking questions. You will find what you need eventually! I pray. Amen.

I belong to a small group at my church of 8 members or so that meet each week. We watch over one another in love and we also discuss with one another how our relationship with God is going every week. This last week we got into some really deep discussions. It is an awesome group and I am very glad we are doing this. The group is based upon a book entitled "THE CLASS MEETING Reclaiming a Forgotten (and essential) Small Group Experience" by Kevin M. Watson.

Why in times of desperation do some people turn towards God while others make deals with the devil? I have never understood what makes people turn one way or the other? I’m talking about people who are middle of the road, not leaning one way or the other, until they need help and in a desperate moment, boom, reach out to one side or the other...?

I am a Christian posting that question. I have posted in this thread many times. I am sorry you do not think it is a Christian question, but it is as I can point to a number of Christian books that dive into this issue. I am looking for feedback from other Christians as it is an issue that I struggle with. I am sorry that your kind of Christianity is different than mine, but that doesn’t make my struggles any less valid. I would appreciate it if you did not try to control and police my posts and struggles. BTW, the book I refer to was recommended by my priest. It is hurtful to be told to go elsewhere when I am struggling to understand facets of Christianity. I would hope that this thread would reflect the inclusive aspects of the religion, being open to the many different facets of the religion. Thank you.

Foxhole shit is not what Christians are made of and Christians Unite is the topic for this thread
Who made you staff to make such statements? Who made you the all knowing of Christianity? Cut it out please. If you have an issue, report the content and let staff look at the matter for what is, and is not, relevant.

The question is relevant, is from a Christian, and is about Christianity.

@EveHarrington - My thoughts on your question (and it is a good question):

I have a friend who was very “whatever” about her health, ate whatever, did whatever, until she had cancer. Then she became obsessed with eating welll and getting healthy. I’ve known someone else who got a terminal diagnosis and went out and gave up a middle of the road lifestyle, and ate all the crap they wanted.

Faith can be like that. When things are ok, people tend to be lukewarm about it. But when the sh*t hits the fan, then people get really serious about it.

Crisis, trial, and difficulties are even pointed out in the Bible itself again and again as settings where faith is refined in the fire.

In the US, lukewarm Christianity is especially prevalent. I find it quite confusing. When I have been abroad in a number of nations where it is not as “easy” to be a Christian, or even living in a city on the US where it is harder, faith seems to become a lot more hot or cold.

It’s like how Jesus pointed out how hard it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven, and it being easier to get a camel through the eye of a needle. Why? Because the rich are comfy. When one is comfy and ok, thy are less motivate to pick up their cross and follow an interiant preacher who called people to come and die to themselves, an inherently painful process.

But when life hurts anyhow? Faith or running away from God, making deals with the devil, God’s enemy, is something people tend to do more.

Humans. We are tossed by the waves of life. Makes me glad for a God that is an anchor even when I’m off kilter.

Hi @EveHarrington I wonder about this same thing sometimes myself. (And by the way, I started this thread and you are more than welcome in it! You and I have conversed here before). Anyway, I did know of someone who got raped and not a long time later, got involved with devil worship. So these things really do happen! When they do, it is heartbreaking to watch, especially when there is nothing one can do to change the outcome. When it happened, I think maybe the person blamed God for the horrible thing that happened, and then turned to God's enemy, thinking there was some kind of future protection there. That is just a guess.

On the other hand, one can run into tragedy in life and pray for deliverance. I do that. I have felt like that if, like in the Book of Job, God allowed something tragic to happen to me or someone I love, for whatever reason, then praying to Him about it is the only way to solve things and make them better. I always think of the Book of Job when I see tragedy strike. That book is so puzzling! However, in some strange kind of way, it does explain this kind of thing and how folks react to it. Look at how Job's wife reacts, for instance. She tells Job to curse God and die. Job does not take her advice, however. No matter how bad things get for him, he blesses the name of the Lord, and things get pretty bad! In the end, he offers sacrifices to God. Finally his life is restored to some resemblance of its original form and things go well for him. What went on behind the scenes in the book of Job between God and Satan, is the thing that fascinates me. Yet, there is not really an answer there to Job's question, which is probably our question too! That is why I say the book is puzzling. (It is in the Old Testament).
