News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

I really need a break from all this.

We had a cruise ship dock that’s been stranded at sea for WEEKS because of a mechanical problem and people really just want to get home, including people who actually live in the islands.

People online (comments on news posts covering this) go dip shit crazy. Accusations. Name-calling. Painting the cruise ship and the people on it as the barge of doom.

They’ve been at sea for 4 weeks. Not a single person is sick. They’ve essentially been self-quarantining for twice the recommended amount of time. Thousands of people - basic statistics would tell you they’re not ALL gonna end up asymptomatic as some commenters claim.

45 of our current 56 positive cases are from residents returning from travels. But OF COURSE it’s the devilish tourists who are gonna destroy the islands by bringing the virus here. Now an entire cruise ship full of people.

Who are a allegedly THE danger of infecting all those people who are currently on order to stay the f*ck home. Anyone else notice the glitch in the matrix here?

Logic and common sense has left the building.

Yes. I know anxiety, fear, panic don’t adhere to the principles of rationale.... but I’m really running out of patience. It’s like people aren’t even trying.

I genuinely hope we'll be getting antibody tests soon.
So. Much. This.

I’d be grateful as f*ck if I could find out if the month long thing half the asthmatics in the city got LAST month was Covid simply treated early and aggressively, the way asthmatics have to come at every respiratory infection. Especially because it was a weeeeeeeeird one, this year. Starting off with a contagious inner ear infection (which, no, those aren’t contagious) that didnt respond to antibiotics and caused 24-72 hours of vertigo, followed by pulmonary edema / bronchiolitis, rather than the more easily managed pneumonia (you can always stick a tube between your ribs to drain the fluid if you’re drowning, but when the fluid is in the tissue itself? Your breathing space simply gets smaller and smaller, and more and more painful. Albuterol, pseudoephedrine, whiskey (alcohol dilates red blood cells increasing o2 transfer & lowering fever; not enough to get buzzed, much less drunk, just enough to suddenly be able to breathe easier and feel flushed), and picking up smoking again to numb my lungs.

Because ^^^that one^^^ wasn’t too bad. I’ve had waaaaay worse.

People online are like bus-people ;)

They’re only as real as you want them to be.

I almost took a job on O last year? Still kinda hoping to next year? (Once my kid is 18 and the drama of my ex/shared custody is nill; assuming I can get it, which is a big IF). I grew up on the pacRim. All over, but mostly Japan. I’m “from”? Nowhere. Maybe the Pacific. Although I spent half my adult life in Latin America and Eastern Europe, and the other half stateside. I still grew up being a Nordic chick in Oriental culture. Whilst I loooove disappearing into the background, like only matched ethnicity can do? H is the only place I’ve ever been that felt like “home”. Travelled all over the world, and it’s the only place I ever felt like I belonged. Loved many places, belonged nowhere. Except O. 90% because of unexpected locals (that blend of asian, western, island culture; similar to Malta in a way, again, Islands, me. I feel claustrophobic on the mainland.) and 10% because of “from everywhere” tourists. LOL. That and the north shore. Could LIVE there, and still commute to the city. That’s my bliss, anywhere in the world. Live back of beyond, but easy train/car ride to urbanity for odds and ends & miscellaneous frippery.

Those assholes driving you mad? Who don’t understand the ship was under quarantine, already? Half of them would give you the shirt off their back in a pinch. Because, Islands. It’s just what people do. (Or shoot you. But hey, ;) Bright sides). But island people protect their own, first. Always. That’s not a bad thing. Even if the only way they can express it is gangland style nonsense. Let the sea take it. Shrug it off. Don’t be cut down by nonsense. Tensions rise, and people start shit, because that’s what people do.

Start calling it “The Quarantine Ship” (wha???// Stuck @ sea, 4 weeks? Quarantine ship, right?) and see how people’s attitudes change, in your real life.

Online? Only as real as you want it to be.

If you want to get assaulted try and say something funny or positive. I have an excuse to be home . For others this is an excuse to be miserable, like I can finally myself go and act the way I really am . I didn't say nothing was wrong, or don't do the right thing about the illness.

But I can limit my access to misery, which is the same as limiting access to the illness. So don't watch the boob tube is like wash your hands. The TV works by making you miserable. Adverts let you know something is wrong and you have to fix it.

I studied marketing at college . All the money that goes into psychology which is the study of human behavior does not go towards helping mentally unstable people .

It goes into predicting what and when we will buy a thing or act or not. To predict and control our behavior .

So I learned not to watch TV in school lol. Besides, I should have something better to do. My wife has to sit in front of the boob tube. She always did. Her mom did too. I can't watch. I can but I have to be aware it's affecting me. We have a fire stick. It's a real upgrade. I watch YouTube. I can play my guitar at the same time. Self stim.

I know it’s Florida, but can you dress in layers? (I wear layers even in the middle of summer.) I live in an apartment, too, and have decided to strip off my outer layer before I enter my apartment. I’d just be down to a cami and bike shorts, so nothing scandalous. ? My clothes would then be immediately washed. I’ll end up doing more laundry, but if it helps keep me safer, so be it

Huh. Don't know. I have to dress business casual at work so a blouse and business pants. I have a pair of shorts but they aren't cool and are cotton. I don't know if I have a cami. I am almost positive i dont as I have never wanted to show my upper arms as thats where self harm scars are. Will have to see. But, yeah, I am thinking that will be too hot. But will see if theres anything I can use.

Looks to me like, you making the effort to move desks would be just as good as - possibly better than - standing your ground and insisting that the other guy move. The directive is "every other desk", and you could make that change as well, seeing as both you and he have desks you typically go to, but those habitual desks aren't conforming to the 'every other' rule. It seems like you're hung up on who should move, rather than letting yourself just solve the problem and move...

I plan on it. Problem is, I have to crate Chopper today and tomorrow and moving takes so much extra time. I need to figure out a place where someone else doesnt sit so not to make someone else upset. Though we dont have assigned seats, I still dont want to ruffle feathers. Especially right now. With people freaking out about disinfecting their desks. Then disinfect it. And setting up a new station in general takes about 15 to 20 extra mins, at best, but usually around 30. Adding in the dinfecting that I am having to do which is already getting there 15 mins early to do that. Just dont know if its the best time while Chopper is in the crate to leave 30 mins earlier then I already leave. I already struggle with crating him as is.

I never planned on asking my sup to ask him to move. That's really dumb if I can just move and solve that. I planned on asking her to see to it that we adhere to the email that is asking us to sit every other seat as no one is doing that and that email came from the corporate. We need to be adhereing to that for everyone's saftey. I actually planned to just simply asking if there were any plans on enforcing that or assigning seats as no one is adhereing to the email. I never planned to bring the coughing guy up, ever.

Sorry if it came across that way.

Helpful link for a bidet in the comments lol

I bet bidets are becoming a shortage online. If not they soon will be.

I plan on just using family cloth. I posted a link to that up thread but can post it again if needed. The person cuts smaller squares of cloth but I have a bunch of smaller cheaper bathroom wash cloths. Plan on using them wet and then washing them if I run out of TP and cant find any.

ETA: Keeping a bucket of vingar and water to put them in before being washed. As the person that does family cloth already suggests. People do this already on purpose in the zero waste movement. It really is possible to live without toliet paper!

I kind of wish we’d had more drastic measures sooner and be done with it sooner.
^That's what a lot of the 20 something people are saying here. The same people who find it impossible to do the social distancing or self-isolating huh?? But now they're confused because they didn't know it applied to them too?? Or, they're still, 'in denial'. Pathetic little generation happening there.

And though starting sooner may have facilitated flattening the curve (won't that be a buzz phrase to remember about 2020) - it doesn't necessarily mean it will be over sooner. Hong Kong, Singapore & China are finding that when they relax the lockdowns the infection rate climbs again.

Starting off with a contagious inner ear infection (which, no, those aren’t contagious) that didnt respond to antibiotics and caused 24-72 hours of vertigo,

^Well that's odd because I've been unwell for almost three weeks with an inner ear infection causing vertigo, runny nose, fever inducing stupid bug that didn't respond to antibiotics. And I've still got it ugh! Maybe I've got, what you've got too?? Doubt it but seriously, I suppose I will just get well enough to catch covid19? Nooo....

On another hand...

Ok, deliberate stupids can be hard to get to.

But just teens?
Teens are suuper teachable.
Teens, young adults, millenials, what have you.
That age / gen people are so frustrated by.

All you gotta do is change how you say it.
Frame safety as Oh cool! :woot: And you guys are saving lives by doing no effort stuff :D
Depending on the local culture or political leanings, it can get varied up:

Oh cool! You are fighting for social justice by not needing the cops escort you anywhere for breaking the law :D

Or Look how aaawesome leader you are for telling all the boys in your gaming group how to not be sick :sneaky:

Dude, you are way better than (fave character monarch from a game everybody is into at the time). :ninja:

Things like that.
And smarter catches on like wildfire.

They're not idiots.
They're young & learning, them.
And need the booore. Ruules... :meh:

Put in a way they *wanna* follow.
It's not that hard.

So more info. Flex time (120 hrs they have given us for Covid-19 which will be paid out at the end of the year...i think it said. It may have been at the end of a certian month. Not sure. But, nice either way) has to be used if confirmed sick with Covid-19 by a doctor or if you have child care needs (like if all day cares are closed and no one to watch them) or family care needs (family you need to take care of with Covid-19).

My sup said "regular sick doesn't count". How the f*ck do you get confirmed if we are short tests? Maybe assumed would apply with a doctor's letter?

And if I get sick, they are not gonna want me in there. You can only call out 2 days. And doctor's are booked for a long while. So what then?

Luckily sore throat went away and never developed into anything.

I was wrong about having to have a setup for work at home. They have you pack up you PC, both screen, mouse and keyboard and take it home and set it up. You are paid for that time. But, they are giving it to people only with HR known health conditions, people with FMLA, etc. I never made HR aware of my health concerns other then the thyroid cancer. And dont take FMLA. And then she said those with good stats that have been there the longest cause they want to know theu can work from home without supervison. My sup doesnt think I'd be considered.

And i didnt have a chance to ask about enforcing the every other seat thing cause i was in personal to ask about those things and she left to go find toliet paper.
