Ask a foreigner

I seem to remember you've been to NZ in the past. Did you manage to try some while you were here?
Feijoa? Yes! But in Latin America.
New Zealand? Waaaaaah! I haven’t! :arghh;

It’s my “If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?” South Island, NZ. Full stop.
:sneaky: :smug: :inlove: :D

You’re probably remembering my bitching about the semester I was supposed to spend there excavating a shipwreck, or my cousin in Christchurch.... OR that it’s my GO! GO NOW! MeMeMeMe!!! Place ;) Dont get me wrong, I’d love a postcard of glow worms, and geysers, and pretty Maori... but South Island has the Southern Alps. (Bestill my heart.) And Beaches. And everything in between. Which, at some point? Needs to include a Friday.

@somerandomguy It’s kind of like a cross between a fig and a kiwi? You eat it like a kiwi, spooning out the flesh, but it tastes more like a fig got it on with a bottle of POG. (Passion, Orange, Guava). They’re aaaaaawesome.

Uhhh ... What is a feijoa?
This article gives a wee run-down. The title makes us sound a bit obsessive of them though :hilarious: but at least it provides an alternative obsession to ?.

Amazingly fragrant, even before you cut into them.
Most people eat them like kiwifruit; cut in half, and then scoop out with a spoon (oh, Friday already had this covered, derp-bell).
The flesh is mostly gritty like a pear, except there's a soft jellyish part in the middle.
Their flavour... I have a hard time explaining. For me it's like the best combination of floral and fruit.

Eat them as is, chuck 'em in a crumble, make 'em into juice (apple and feijoa is a personal favourite).
We even have sour feijoa lollies (candy) that you can buy at a dairy (corner store) (non-pandemic times, of course  ), and I'm not too proud to admit that I totally started salivating just looking them up :hilarious:

Very cool!

Oooooh, I see I see! :)

I realise I have some pretty strong biases, but I do think that when you do make it here, it'll be even better than you'd envisioned. Make sure you put Fiordland and all its glory on the to-do list, too ;)

I really wish I could get them here. :(, when I was younger you could get tree tomatoes here but no more. I recently ordered some pineapple chunks and marshmallow fish for DH who has never tried either. Pineapple chunks were just the same - marshmallow Fish were different to how I remember though.

it’s a fruit @somerandomguy.

Edit- strongly agreeing with Friday’s South Island bias for personal reasons- Go @Friday , go . But the north island is great too. It’s an incredible place.

Uhhh ... I've always eaten kiwifruits like an apple. I love the rind - so sour and crunchy. But now that I've heard how an actual Kiwi eats them, I'm know I'm doing it wrong ?
Which colour kiwifruit are we talking?

Golden: I'll do the skin. Often slice the whole thing straight up and onto my brekkie.

Green: Skin gets a big noop. There's so much fur on it!

In what context, WT? Because I can think of pretty innocent contexts & pretty nasty ones just differentiated by context you asking.

And yo SRG! I wouldn't even know one can eat kiwis like apples under usual (not in a hurry) circumstances :hilarious: I usually saw it eaten that way just when Needa snack, gotta jet :D

Personally the spoon type. Yaaay kiwi. Kiwi is awesome. Probably made in heaven.

Do you know I've never heard of em, never seen one, only knew of the green ones!
I’d never heard of them, @bellbird mentioned them awhile back, I walk into the grocery store the same day And. There. They. Were.

So I figure I’ve been seeing/not seeing them for yeeeeears & ask the produce guy about them and he’s all WTF are these??? Who stocked these? I didn’t stock these! We don’t carry whatever the hell these things are.

:roflmao: :roflmao:

So I bought them.

Soooooo sweet. Almost like flat Mountain Dew? Nope. Nope. Nope. GREEN ONES are where it’s at :sneaky: All effervescent and wowza, the green ones. Kissing in the rain, that’s falling in the sunshine, the golden ones.

I’ll take both just so I can think of these descriptions each time ♥️

( I peel my kiwis with a knife- I eat most fruit with a knife or prepared but not all)

Well get ready to have your socks knocked off, because there are red ones too!

Though I think the red ones haven't really made it out to the big wide world yet, and tbh I've only tried one and it was definitely not my favourite thing.

I haven't seen the red ones since, and I do wonder if they just released a small batch to NZ supermarkets to get some consumer feedback. But hopefully they'll be back and improved soon.

And lol, @Friday , I loved that story!
I'll give you all of my green ones
