News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

How about measles or TB testing for free to the patient? Because we don’t do that. We charge for those even when it’s in the public interest to do them. Free isn’t always free.
I think probably it's reasonably apparent why places might have one approach for managing the costs of medical testing and care generally, but take a different approach to trying to control the current covid pandemic.

We watched the documentary "Coronavirus: Into The Red Zone" last week. If you google it you can find the whole documentary online. It was interesting that when they took off their PPEs there was concern that even though they hadn't touched anything tiny particles could be on those suits. I find that concerning. There's serious implications for medicos reusing gowns and equipment if that is the case. It's an amazing documentary but leaves you feeling sombre. Not for watching if you are feeling low or are struggling.

I have forgotten what the rule is for posting links I will have to read up on that again. I hope that this is okay.

No, it’s not apparent to me why many with one infectious disease drown to the point of bankruptcy in medical debt but others do not. It’s for the public good that people do not have to choose between infectious disease testing for AIDS, measles, etc along with covid 19 testing or buying food - yet that is a reality many face in the US. Also. I had to pay for a covid 19 test for which I’m still waiting for results 2 weeks later. Testing is not free across the board and treatment costs are not at all being waived.

When the White House said they would be. UGH!

ETA: When I want udate and info about where we are with Covid-19 and when things will happen, what's going on, etc. the White House cornovirus tasks force plays a f*cking video about the timeline of what the President did and whether he was right or not (and governors thanking Trump) based one ONE f*cking article written. Who the f*ck cares? I want to know where we are, what we are doing next, when we will have our lives back! We watch the White House updates for f*cking updates! For f*ck sake!

We do not have a king and the president is limited in power. Trump Just Made A Promise That Actively Defies The 10th Amendment. Trump says he can open up businesses and states over governors but governors and the constitution disagree and prohibit this from occurring. State governors and public health departments are the best sources to follow for plans moving forward.
Also, it's a pandemic with little data because it's all so new. To some degree, no one really knows what the future holds. The specific plans you want may not be possible at this point in time. If they were, I'm sure it would be released as it would help the economy to have a clear plan in place.

I don't mean tell us the future but rather tell us what we are doing now, what measures are being taken, what is being done in the next few days, and basically LEAD!

That video he played pissed me right off. All he cares about is if he was right or not and is just fighting with the press!

Jesus! What a dumpster fire! What the f*ck am i am even watching! Never have I watched a White House Press Conf like this!

ETA: Watching it is giving me anxiety! It's sad!

ETA2: He said payments started Fri. I havent received it yet. Last few years of tax returns were auto pay in my current bank account. I guess its paid over this week?

Sorry - there was zero intention on my part to spark a debate about the costs of healthcare generally. This isn't the thread for a discussion like that.

I was simply pointing out that this virus has turned economies upside globally, appears to warrant the curtailing civil liberties en masse, and caused governments to pump trillions of dollars into rescue packages of all manner. Globally.

It's not about comparing diseases, or the merits of free public healthcare. The necessary steps required to get the world through this global pandemic has changed all the rules. Including really fundamental ones, like "am I free to walk down the street".

Given the costs involved in getting us through this, the lengths governments are having to go to, to get us to the other side of this - it makes no sense to me that a government would ask individual citizens to shoulder the cost of testing for covid. That small cost, in the scheme of what this virus is costing us (not just economically), makes no sense to me, since testing is at the core of getting this pandemic under control.

I'm not trying to be argumentative. But the rulebook has been thrown out the window to try and get this thing under control. And testing, specifically testing, is at the very core of getting this thing under control.

I'm all for free public health - but that's a completely seperate issue to how critical it is to identify where the virus hotspots are, and getting them under control.

The steps required for managing this pandemic are patently different to the rules and policies we apply in our ordinary lives. Given the importance of testing in the battle to get all of our lives back to normal, not offering that for free makes no sense to me. It makes no sense to me that the rule about who usually pays the pathology bill is one of the few rules that a government wouldn't be prepared to shift on.
