Maybe the ultimate lesson is that those of us who live in democracies need to do a better job of picking our leaders.
there are just so many responses to this, most of them would get me thread banned. I have written about six of them, and decided not to post them. @scout86, I do believe we agree on something, probably many things. This is the one with the biggest worldwide impact, and it is of the corona virus, so I will just say I agree and that I share the hope that a new crop of voters that have seen how fragile our democracy is through adult eyes will indeed look for leaders and not ..........there I go, getting thread banned again.

. I was gobsmacked that Congress actually fought over the US stimulus package, for example. Like, really? Is this the time for politics?

Trump wanted his name on the stimulus checks, even if it delayed them and no president ever have had their names on stimulus checks. Not sure it's just Congress. f*cking politics in America man!

Florida schools have to do online learning for the rest of the school year.

Also, because everyone is at home, wifi is dropping way more then usual. Reboot your modems or routers more often (weekly is a good timeframe but apartments may need to every few days) and log into your modem's or routers (whichever delivers your wifi), the IP for the device should be on the bottom as 192.168.X.X (fill in the Xs by what's on the bottom), the login should also be on the bottom. Plug the IP into a connected device's (wired or wireless) browser's address bar, log in with the login on the bottom and changed to WPA/WPA2. It changes it to a more compatible security which helps devices connect and stay connected. It's seeming to help most people. Make sure your channel selection is on auto so when you reboot it finds the most free channel. Do the opposite one you're connected to if wifi as it will drop and reconnect. And remember 2G goes further, not as fast and 5G faster but not as far. And a device may constantly go back and forth, so you may need to forget one. Hardwire any PC you must work or do school on. Wifi will never be 100% stable. Wired in is.

Hopefully that helps some. Not only is that happening to me but its what most are calling in about.

Also, if your internet usage has gone up a lot, you may need to raise your speed up for right now. Its a bucket that everything takes its speed from (including devices on but not used) and eventually that bucket is empty. Once empty, all devices that come after will take speed from other devices causing slow speed until your internet completely crashes (packet loss). So, if thats the case, call your ISP and see if you can upgrade your speed.

I feel for people on DSL. There is a very small limit to internet speed through a phone line. But hopefully this helps as these are the things most are calling about.

ETA: Check your cell data. As your phone/tablet drops wifi, it may go back on and off cell data throughout the day. If you dont have unlimited cell data, keep an eye on it.

Oh, and a neighbor is throwing a HUGE 100 person-ish birthday party. Yeah, perfect time for that! Sigh!

I didn't break down the relative mortality rates, but I hope the US medical system holds for you guys. Tough days ahead
ya -- if we release the hounds before mid-May the virus will just ramp up again.
It seems people are so densentized to death now that those numbers don't mean anything to them or scare them anymore.
I think it's more likely that they either have convinced themselves that the whole thing is "fake", or they've convinced themselves that nothing's going to happen to THEM, so it doesn't matter.
Ya have to agree with @scout86 -- because they don't know anyone personally who has died from it they don't believe it's happening, or if it is they say it's just a minor thing. Can't convince them that the shutdown is why it isn't worse. But they will get their wish and find out.
I WISH, once this is all over, our governments would sit down and think through "What do we need to make sure of in case of a disaster?".
This is the part that makes me nuts. We had a branch of FEMA that was responsible for pandemics. They had a plan. they had the money, they had the equipment. Trump disbanded it as not necessary. And here we are. The only saving grace is that his approval rating is crashing more and more - probably because of his temper tantrums that he is passing off as press briefings

I would question the 2nd half of that statement. It MAY be entirely, 100% accurate. Hell, it may well explain why departments in almost constant use in FEMA -like during annual hurricane season- were complete clusterf*cks of mismanagement shit for funds.

I’ve worked “with” FEMA a few times. (Read, I avoided the hell out of them, as much as humanly possible.) There’s durn good reason that the international disaster response peeps had a patch made we stuck on our gear.

f*ck
Everything
Motherf*cker &
Run

I’m not a fan of the sitting president. But anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together to get a spark? Would have GUTTED that organization. It was a complete shit show, run by toddlers with head injuries. <<< A lot like the thing that happens with the military during peace time, when the pencil pushers start rewriting how to do shit. Except FEMA had no excuse... they were in constant use/misuse. But every single time they got called on to do anything? It was like it was the very first time. >>>
Anyone with HALF a brain, meanwhile, after gutting that shit show would have stipeneded experts from all of the -actually functional- NGOs to sit on its board and rebuild it. That’s what happens, anyway, every single freaking time... FEMA doesn’t know what the f*ck it’s doing, so it starts banging on the doors (ideally, of course, some years it’s refusing to listen to their own door being pounded on) of whatever org DOES know it’s ass from a hole in the ground. Except what usually happens, is those people are already eyeballs deep doing shit, are now being asked to work 2 jobs, their own and liaising with idiots, who not only do. not. listen. to the recommendations, but actively fight them... like the only reason they asked for help was to know how to block what the other org is doing.

For all I know the pandemic-prep side of FEMA? Was the golden child of the org... with top flight people poached from the best schools and companies in the world, with panty dropping go teams anyone in NBC would have fought like hell to get into.

But my personal experience with FEMA? If they show up (whether they start issuing bullshit orders, or are just standing around with their thumbs up their assess, whining), grab your good people and make like hell for anywhere inconvienent for them to get to. Because they won’t go to the effort of taking the stairs if the elevator is out... and if someone actually does? Poach them for your team! It’ll save them from being indicted by what ever idiot is looking for a scapegoat as soon as the emergency is over (FFS, seeeeeriously. I have worked with a couple great FEMA teams, and each team was brought up on criminal charges by the political mucky mucks in charge, as soon as things were over. Because they’re looking for who to blame, almost from day 1. And anyone who actually gets shit done? CLEARLY the person to fire :banghead: Pencil. Pushers. Aaaargg. )... and you can get real work done whilst they f*ck off.

So if they are going to deliberately put themselves in harms way to make a point, you might as well let them do it to make some money. (Yes. I know why that's bad, don't lecture me please.)

^No lecture intended.

If we allow people to put themselves in harms way - two things arise - 1/. they spread it to people who'd rather not be infected (or put in harm's way as you put it)

and 2/. having put themselves in harms way & become infected, they then need & ask for help medically to overcome the virus/harm. ICU/hospitals, other patients especially our elderly and of course our first responders & medical personnel are then grossly affected by these people that were making a decision just for themselves?

They need labor for the early crops, they need tourists to keep their own restaurants and hotels from folding,

^And unfortunately though they do need those things - do they need some stranger/tourist/labourer walking into their region/county with a virus that is sure to infect everyone they come into contact with and everything they touch?

Both of these statements I have much sympathy for. I understand the simple need to provide & go do a decent days work to get it. But this virus exploits this part of our human nature - the part where we rely on other humans.

And on the upside of that line?

This is one of those economic divide things that happen both when people are quite wealthy & quite poor very easily/naturally... but the middle class would have to bend heaven and earth to accomplish it. Not impossible, by any means, “just” a massive kind of change of lifestyle that most people are very resistant to.

In many places? People are moving in together. Pooling resources, limiting exposure, bettering their lives by coming together, instead of risking them.

Not just private homes, but also some businesses.

One of the pubs I know downtown has about 50 people living in it, right now. Owner, employees, & their families. Parking lot has been fenced, wood chipped, and a play area set up for the kids. Rooftop garden. 2 people go out for supplies once a month, and then quarantine for 2 weeks after... although they’re hoping to get supply runs down to once every 3 months. They’ve completely relaid out the space to suit a large group of people living there full time, with both private and public spaces, a gym, school room... as well as outings/field trips by van to local farms and wilderness areas. The only people they’re around? Is each other. They were all/most of them living on the brink already, paycheck to paycheck, and when the virus hit? The owner was like... you know what? f*ck this. Let’s reorganise. <<< I have a girlfriend who used to work there / lives there now, which is how I know about it.
