Recommendations for kids animated films?

When I’m feeling anxious/low/triggered/in need of some cosy time, I like to watch family movies, especially animated films. They help me to relax and to feel more grounded.

I get a bit overwhelmed with choice on Netflix etc and have ended up watching a few meh ones lately, so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations?

I especially like ones with animal characters! My absolute favourites are Zootropolis (called Zootopia in some countries, I think?!), Secret Life of Pets, and Sing!

But I also enjoyed Inside Out, Encanto and Luca - so animals aren’t essential!

Ideally films without too much sadness running throughout (I know loads of these films often feature a death/bereavement, which is ok - but preferably not films where this is a central long-running theme).

Very happy to watch things from wherever with subtitles, so language doesn’t matter.

I could really do with getting a little library together so I have some ready when I need one. So, hit me with your favourites, please!

(And sorry that this isn’t a very mature ask - I’m a little embarrassed posting this request, but I know it’s a form of self-care that helps me!)

Yes but somehow I still found them educational/realistic, but I don't know how to explain that. I hope you enjoy and I'd love to know if you like them too
I’ll look them up and add them to my list. They sound quite gentle and sweet, which would be helpful sometimes, I think. Thanks 😊

disney plus has a nice selection of soothing feel good movies. i especially recommend "encanto," "turning red," "soulman" and "coco."

Hey @barefoot , are you considering TV shows too?
If so, The Backyardigans are nice. Animated animal characters with big imaginations who go on adventures together.
They aren't on Netflix (at least, not in my country), but they have an official YouTube channel that has a lot of ~24 min episodes here.

I also wanted to say, I have a similar coping mechanism (but watching children's TV shows, rather than films typically), so you aren't alone in finding this comforting.

Nothing to be sorry about, it’s really quite common. Most people I know, regardless of mental state, have comfort movies. Things they can watch that are familiar and just to take them out of their day for a bit. More often than not it is an animated film they love. When I was a kid I lost myself in some movies and really took to acting and impressions of them. I would play some in my head when the house was in chaos or if I needed to “get away” from something, again more often than not.

Some of these are ones I just like, and there’s a couple are comfort watches. Moana, that was a surprise good one for me. Mulan, it was the first movie I had ever seen with a female lead that wasn’t tripping over a prince, so it’s been a fav. Lilo & Stitch. Balto. Scooby-Doo, the older series. I have some super weird ones that are definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Invader Zim, Courage the Cowardly Dog, CatDog. Corpse Bride.

I could go forever.

Thanks @arfie I think we have Disney+ but I always forget about it!

I saw Turning Red the other day, which was fun. Though I couldn’t work out why she was so upset when she turned - I’d think it was fantastic if I woke up and found I was a red panda who could talk 😂

I think I’ve been avoiding Coco because I heard it was very sad?

Thanks @bellbird - definitely happy to include TV shows as sometimes it’s handy to have something shorter. The Backyardigans sounds right up my street, thanks!

And thanks for normalising finding kids stuff soothing

Thanks, I’ll check these out! CatDog looks brilliant!

I didn’t love Moana but can’t remember why. Perhaps I’ll give it another go sometime. Haven’t seen Mulan but it appeals more than other Disney ‘princess’ stuff for the reasons you mention.

especially if i could turn back and forth at will. . . still, the first go-rounds would be a serious shock to the system.

sad? ? ? ? that one hadn't even occurred to me. the sadness in coco resolves to a happy ending. since the story line deals with the afterlife, the happy ending is literally ever after. my foster kids (ages 8, 6 and 3) adore the movie. me, too.

another i might add to the list us not animated, but still quite soothing on the topic of self-discovery is, "finding ohana." another animated gem is, "riverdance."

Ah, maybe someone was being a bit over-protective of me then as I’d just had a very shocking bereavement, so I think they thought it would be upsetting for me. I’ll put it back on the list!
