Anyone know where I can find a trauma therapist, preferably emdr, in Ohio city? I prefer in person, but would try online. Thanks in advance.

It’s hard for us to say because you can’t go on websites alone. A therapist may list EMDR (or trauma in general) as one of their services, because they did a workshop on it and kinda know the gist of it. You may talk to the person and realize they never actually did it on a client.

Word of mouth is really the only way to find a good one. I’d look into local in-person trauma groups.

Thanks. Do you know where I can find a local in person trauma group because I was looking for that as well. Hard to find a support group, but very important as I feel alone.

All I can tell you is what worked for me. I did a bunch of online searching with various keywords. I dug into the weeds of a dozen websites. Sometimes an exact match for your condition is impossible, so you at least find supportive people in a relevant world. Gotta start somewhere.

A group where you click is more important than a group for your diagnosis.

one of the best resources to look through is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. You can access them by going to www.nami.org and then searching for your state and city. They maintain a great network of local affiliates, and that's where you'll find information on groups and other local resources.

Remember that sometimes, the group doesn't need to be absolutely specific to your personal issue. There's a lot of overlap between supporting mood disorders and supporting trauma/PTSD. Also, interacting with other people in your locale will give you a way to begin talking with others about the therapists and resources that they are aware of. It starts to make it all less mysterious.

I’m in Oz so can’t offer specifics, however here we have a number of women’s health centres, state victims services portals, and abuse survivor access lines; all of which have staff who know therapists nearby with experience or speciality in trauma so they might be a good place to ask as I’m assuming something similar exists in the US, I know it does in NZ (I’ve used equivalent services there) and a friend in the UK has found therapy in a similar way there. 🌺
