Ask a foreigner

Newman’s & Cardini’s.

Newman’s will be oilier.
Cardini’s will be blander.

BOTH could use a shot/dash of ground peppers/fresh herbs. And will still be? Olier/Blander.

Seeeeriously… take whatever your fave brand of salad crème, & add water/parsely/basil/chive/pepper… et voila.

BOTH Newmans & Cardini’a are good…. Just not? WOW.

Buying either? Add water + fines herbs + salt & pepper mix.

For true. The average shop here, has at least half a dozen kinds of “ranch” (Original, bacon. Bleu, etc.). The average supermarket, at least 100+.

Creamy + Herbaceous. (Plus ??? Bacon, Bleu, etc.)

Do people make their own ranch or buy it?
If not vegan or allergic… people buy it. “Hidden Valley”, is the name brand. (Hunts, etc., all have versions, but ‘Hidden Valley’ is like Heinz….or?) Like H&B

If vegan, or allergic, made. By one’s fave vegan mayo + water + herbs/spices

Is it not allowed to post brands, sorry if so
Brands are perfectly fine, site wise.

USA, wise… Newman’s & Cardini’s are wildly popular. Maybe 8% on Hidden Valley (over 90%). But? 8% is a significant market share.

One cannot GET Hidden Valley in the EU. But one CAN get Cardini’s & Newman’s Own.

Yeah amazon & Ebay have it for £7 plus, which is more than I'll pay
It’s $3, here. At most. For apx 1 litre. Less, for less. Like 30-60-120 pence for 250-500g. (Although we describe it in ounces).

If it makes you feel better? It’s $20 for 350g of Marmite & $30 for Vegemite.

Even though both are pence in AU & UK.

Staples vs Luxuries.

Ranch & Mayo & Ketchup & Mustard are staples, in the USA. And? Correspondingly cheap. $1-$5.

Roundabouts are like the arc de triomphe. Multiple streets intersecting, to swing “correctly” (left/right) until you peel off. Without traffic lights. But by convention. In the same direction of traffic, all the way round.

Swings… have maaaaany meanings. None of them traffic related.

SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS? Not a thing, at all. Like mustard & tires (posh), or bicycle chicken (tough). Just aren’t USA things.

@Teasel The Hidden valley ranch powder that you can get in the states and mix with mayo/sour cream/greek yogurt is SO GOOD that I import it to where I live every time I go back to the states.

But depending on where you live, this traffic pattern is also called a rotary. But generally, a rotary is larger and are meant to maintain speed in them. Roundabouts are smaller and meant to slow traffic down.

There used to be a food place at the mall that was called Boardwalk Fries and they had the *best* ranch but it was unavailable in the stores. Local fast food place has ranch fries and their ranch tastes the same. Can’t buy it in stores. Maybe it’s a Sysco thing.

Or an island, just a single meter of concrete, or a tree/garden. At the intersection of every block. Especially common in cities where neighbourhoods are major traffic ways / no highways… to keep people driving 25 instead of 60, 3 meters from people’s front doors.

You can make your own amaaaaaazing ranch with :

- PARSLEY (2:1 of -almost- everything that follows)
- Dill/Chives
- Tarragon/ fines herbs/ almost any herbs, truly. <<< PARSLEY, dill, & chives form the base. Everything else is by mood.
- DRIED basil <<< fresh or freeze dried is best for everything EXCEPT basil. Basil must be dried, or omitted. Fresh basil in ranch is gross. No. Idea. Why.
- Salt & Pepper (a pepper blend is better than just black pepper. Pretty much ANY pepper blend; black/white/pink/green/red/smoked
- Paprika or smoked paprika. Just a dash. So it looks like sparkles, rather than turning it red.

Put the freeze dried herbs in just enough water to rehydrate.

Add vegan mayo -or- add mayo/buttermilk/cream cheese.

I make vegan-ranch two or three times a week, with just a few pinches of herbs, splash of water, and vegan mayo.

***
Variations abound. Bacon Ranch. Pepper Ranch (overloaded!). Parmesan Ranch. Add another 40 or 50 things.
