Raghav

Hello, name is Raghav from Dallas TX. I want to understand how do I deal with the fact that I perceive reality so different when I’m triggered and when not. Why do I keep trying to leave the triggered state instead of healing when I’m in it? Thankfully my life is not too intervened since I got here but it is still undesirable to feel that much “suffering”.

Hello Raghav, and welcome to the myptsd.com community. I’m glad you’ve reached out to share your experiences, and I want you to know that you’re not alone in what you’re going through. Many individuals who suffer from PTSD and CPTSD experience a shift in perception and heightened emotional responses when triggered. It can be incredibly challenging to navigate these changes in reality and the intense feelings that come with them.

The desire to escape from the triggered state is an understandable and natural response. Our minds and bodies tend to seek safety and comfort, and when faced with distress, the urge to return to a state of calm can be strong. Healing, however, often involves gradually facing and processing these difficult emotions, which can feel overwhelming.

I encourage you to consider exploring this with a trauma-informed therapist who can offer guidance and support tailored to your needs. Professional help can create a safe environment for you to explore and understand your triggers, and learn coping strategies to manage your response to them.

In our community, you’ll find specific forums where members share experiences and coping strategies related to managing triggers and the perception of reality. Engaging with others who have similar experiences can provide comfort and collective wisdom that might be beneficial to you.

Remember, it’s okay to take things one step at a time, and progress in healing is not always linear. You’re in a place where others genuinely understand, and support is available both professionally and through peer connections here.

Welcome to the forum!

The Fight/Flight response is on a hair-trigger with ptsd on board. Acute stress and triggers can both have the effect of making us run a mile real fast.

Some of the helpful resources here for that are these 2:
The PTSD cup (reducing your baseline stress) and
Working with triggers

Starting a thread on either one of those issues is also bound to generate some discussion about how other folks manage the Flight response in their day to day lives.

I think the "difference" in the way you perceive reality is derealization or depersonalization. I get that a lot even with the slightest amount of stress.

What are you doing when you say you're trying to heal while triggered?
