What Is The One Thing You Wish People Knew/ Understood About Ptsd Or Trauma?

I know for me, I wish I had known that there was no specific (or set) way people must react to trauma or treatment. I am just wondering about the things you discovered later (especially on this forum) that you wish someone had told you earlier.

Hi Nemo

Are you asking Supporters or Sufferers (just checking the thread is in the right area) and have you read any of the many posts, especially sticky threads, which talk about similar things?

I understand you are doing a study... I think you need to have a more structured approach to your questions as you are subject to getting so many random responses to a question like this one depending on which side of the fence you sit on.

Hi Nemo

I have merged your thread from the Supporters Area with this one.

You came here for the purpose of study and research yet you seem to be posting questions of a similar nature over the forum while not actually following through with your initial post
I am a Purdue Master's thesis research student. If you have a moment to spare please help take a survey. We are trying to understand the impact of social networks on the lives of PTSD and or TBI patients, or the those who support them. The study anonymous and cannot be traced back to you. If interested in responding to the survey, please let me know and I will send you the link.
as I understand members are still waiting for the link.

Please be specific in your questions, read the posts here as some already contain the answers to your questions and if you are asking members to support you then please follow through.

Thank you.

I would like to know the supporter's point of view, but both are welcome. Yes I have been reading some threads, they have been quite informative. When I posted this, I was thinking more about what a new person to the site can learn in one setting than having to browse everything to pick and choose.

Sorry, I am still trying to find my way about. I keep trying to post the link but I am unable to do so until I get 10 posts, so I am still working on it. I would follow through. Sorry to keep you all waiting.

You have 12 posts.

I see your point Nemo however everyone comes here with a similar but different requirement so what is useful to you in one thread for study purposes may not necessarily suit another member's needs. Don't forget you can use the search feature in the top right of each page also.

That the reason I am glad people in my life don't understand PTSD is because it means they don't have it
Your statement makes a lot of sense. It is a hard fact to cope with.

CPSTD, thanks so much for sharing. You are a motivation not only to me, but other members on the forum who are having a hard time.

Family, friends and others you know, don't understand that you can't "just get over it" and move on. You could try Anthony's PTSD cup explanation. They need to understand that your way of thinking as been altered, and is no longer the same as they're. Because of this, your reaction to daily events and trauma varies depending on the situation.

It is too exhausting trying to explain to people what having PTSD entails. True friends except you the way you are. People who don't including family, are not worth the time and negativity that can possibly cause you more psychological damage.

  • That its life long.
  • that cpstd really exists
  • that it shapes your whole personality
  • thats its tough!!!!!!!!!!!
So many people think its been a long time since my trauma but sometimes it feels like it was yesterday. My self beliefs are changing with therapy but it a long hard road to tread.

I wish people understood that PTSD is something I need to manage every day, just like allergies, or diabetes, or high blood pressure.

This statement reminded me of the conversation i had with my line manager when i returned to work after sick leave. She asked ' what about ptsd, are they still calling it that', have you still got it? thankfully that tells me that i manage my symptoms well but it also shows her lack of understanding.

Recovery can and does happen but according to my psych is never complete, i will always have some symptoms to manage & crisis points.
