What Is The One Thing You Wish People Knew/ Understood About Ptsd Or Trauma?

I wish people would understand how lonely it is to have PTSD and difficult it is for me to be different. How hard is for me to express what I feel.

Nadia, if I could 'like' your post 100 times I would.

That is exactly how I feel.

What a gift that is, isn't it, to be given that. :)

On horrible days, or at horrible moments, I try to think or remember how that feels (above).
Such relief, it's so critical, so rare, just reduces 'feeling bad' so much.

Dear Nadia, I actually didn't just 'like' that line, but your whole post in it's entirety.

[Sorry Muzikluvr, I knew not to quote 'all' of it (which is why I left one sentence out,:rolleyes: -Sorry to make extra work for you! :( ) ]

Nadia, can only say that in (or 'after') 30+ years with ptsd I've rarely read anything that resonates more. Thank you. :)

I understand everyone is different and that people approach trauma differently, after reading some of the posts here. If there was one thing you wanted people to know or understand about PTSD/trauma, what will that be?

I hate to state the obvious, but I really wish people would understand that I CANNOT just get over it! I did not seek this state of being and upon finding it, say to myself, "Now that's the way I want to live!"

Exactly. As if any of us wouldn't "just get over it" if we had the choice.

I think really people are saying, "stop making me worry that the world's not OK". I wish people would accept that it isn't, that bad things do happen and people do get seriously affected by them - to be honest, I think they need to get over their denial about that.

Thank you Junebug! I am really glad you could appreciate this. I have some few friends from art school who are like this. It sometimes takes time to develop it. But it is something that is so important too. My PTSD helped to know how much I really need that.

One friend, I never actually met her, but no matter what I write to her she always writes me back and is there for me. She does not judge. She knows her own boundaries but still is able to give in that way. It really is special. I think most people on this site understand that. I think having PTSD is also a training in a way to know what it means to be respectful in a social context. We have to learn how to accept ourselves completely the way we are and also accept others completely the way they are. That way we can learn to forgive. It is not easy but helps to heal. (((hugs)))

...But complex trauma changes who you are... It changes your personality. It shapes your self concept. It builds the foundations of concepts such as safety, trust and freedom in ways that are not typical...

Thank you, Maddog!

Your comment, in its entirety, is a prime example of my reason for becoming a member here! I mean to say that I am grateful for such an opportunity to relate with another human being on this level!

I've just been away- in the hospital, where I shared a bit of this new knowledge with someone who may very well have needed to receive it. I have only just begun!

Truly, I am new to the knowledge of C-PTSD, fairly new to any knowledge of PTSD, (among other issues), but quite eager to face a brighter day! I will look forward to sharing my journey with more like you!

I wish people would just take a second to listen...to realize that I never asked for this, I'm not attention seeking or crying and shaking etc because I want to get out of writing a stupid essay (for example).

I wish people would recognize that I feel terrible at times, that I would give anything to not be plagued by the memories, the nightmares, the flashbacks, the dissociation. :(

"what is the one thing you wish people knew/understood about PTSD or trauma?"

I wish the people I know could read all of your eloquent responses to this query.

So many of these postings hit home for me and contain the words and descriptions I would love to have readily available at the tip of my tongue.

I'm not there yet where I can share or post much of an opinion on this forum and am more of a voyeur who is learning from all your words. But I want to say - Thank you for all of these posts.

PTSD Is walking death; it is disabling.

Society is immature and will not understand conditions of the outskirt fringes of civilization. The fringes of society can include death, disability, disease, trauma, war, criminal victimization, starvation/homelessness. These are negatives of society.

I wish the general public understood these above conditions are real for many people and not something only found in feature movies.

PTSD makes interaction with people very difficult.
