How Do You Deal With Distorted Thoughts?

I can say my distorted thoughts regards fearing the worst outcome(s) are likely my mind's way of psyching up or preparing, not to be taken off guard what is coming or not recognizing how bad the situation I am already in *might* be, like I was during some traumas. And/ or perhaps feeling it is inevitable. (Well that and because I'm 1/2 Irish. ) Seriously, it's an awful way to live and I am trying to work on it. Increased adrenaline levels don't make it any easier. It also precludes 'hope', I think.

There's a lot of great input here. Thank you guys for all of the things you said. I'm rereading through it because I'm triggered again and my thoughts are so distorted that I actually have a fuzzy feeling in my head. I think that what I'm thinking is probably wrong but I'm scared to believe that. I'm looking at the things a close friend of mine is saying and not saying and doing and not doing for hidden clues of danger. And even though I'm pretty sure most of my thoughts are distorted right now they feel so absolute that I feel like to not believe them would be the delusional thing. I really hate that my brain tries to protect me by first scaring the sh*t out of me.
