@Philippa : well he's actually the opposite of co-dependent, or at least that's what he wants the world to think. He wants to be the strong head of the family, the provider. Now that he's unemployed and depressed, he feels like a complete failure. He's told me that.

He hasn't mentioned hurting himself if my parents break up. He hasn't mentioned the possibility of losing Mom at all. But I don't know if that's a good sign, given his need to appear strong and pretty much invincible.

Ah yeah...that's a very fragile precipice to be walking around. I can empathize with where he is at, though I'm not a man. It must be awful to have that instinct to provide and not be able to.

He may just be unwilling to consider it. That would be a very hard thing to think about.
