Noisy Neighbors

For the last five months, almost every single morning, my neighbor's live in boyfriend has been doing projects around her property. He is within the bounds of the noise control laws, but he's grinding metal, welding, sawing, chopping, pounding, revving engines, you name it.

I work second shift, so this means it wakes me up, almost every single damn day.

This morning I lost it, and I went over to speak to him. He said, it is what it is, he's sorry, but tough. He also complained about the screaming, yelling and cussing from my house at all hours. Not sure what the hell he's talking about, except for a very few times when my older kids were here this summer, and were hanging out with friends. Otherwise, my teen daughter and I keep to ourselves and are pretty freaking quiet. We don't have a dog, like he does, that sits and bays at nothing for hours, whenever left at home alone.

Ugh. So frustrated and angry. Thanks for letting me vent.

Neighbors can be a real pain. That's one of many reasons I prefer to live out in the country, for more space. A sound insulating fence between your properties may help.
**In their yard, erect a sign that says “New Satanic Church”. On the lawn, place an old store mannequin in a black shroud and hang a dead chicken on the house. Put a sign on the front door which reads “Closed Due To Persecution.” Erect a large totem with a grinning skull and goat horns on top.
Smear a lot of meat grease on his garbage can. This will attract every animal, both wild and domestic, for miles around, resulting in a great deal of noise, fighting, and confusion. All of this will irritate the neighborhood, which then will blame your neighbor.
You might want to add some goodies of your own to your neighbor's personal garbage can, such as sex toys, bondage magazines, perverted letters, fetish gear, gimp suit, satanic materials, etc.

That sounds awful.

White noise machines might help. They saved my stressed out brain from losing sleep over the noise the college students make next door.

If his dog is barking for long periods of time, that may be an animal control issue - but taking action like that would likely increase the stress around all of this.

I hope you can find a way to get some restful sleep and some peace and quiet soon!

Thank you guys. Made me laugh and settle down. Guy is an arse, but I don't want to escalate anything. They didn't make any noise today, probably because my wild haired rampage scared then yesterday, but I'm cool with that. We'll see...

Ha ha @Whispering_Truth love it.

I don't know if the law works the same way where you live, but in the city I live in. A noise complaint can be made anytime of the day. Obviously doing anything super loud at night is not really allowed. But if someone is making obscene amounts of noise during daylight hours, you can still file a complaint.

The idea being that a residential area is made for people to live in, excessive amounts of industrial noise (like what you described) is really better suited to an industrial zone. Nothing wrong with being handy but, enormous noise all day every day is ridiculous.

He should be renting a workshop if he wants to do full on construction.

My husband works nightshift. My idiot neighbors have two hunting dogs that sit in a concrete yard and howl for their whole sad lives. We got light blocking curtains because they also insulate against sound, he wears earplugs, and he runs a fan year round. When it's cold he just aims the fan away from him. These small changes have made it it much more bearable and he gets much better sleep. Just my .02

@AnnaLost

I feel for you! Already so hard to sleep, and stay asleep. I sleep with two loud fans every night for white noise from several barking dogs (can't wait to move.) Once one starts they all start 2-3-6-10-12 of them? In an apartment in area of city where people keep dogs on roof terraces, and regular balconies, in this Latin American neighborhood. Never experienced this before in US or Latin American.

- Try the soft foam earplugs. I keep them by my bed now.
- Ecotones Sound + Sleep Machine. It adapts to adjust to loud noises. Used in the US.

Or more sinister side teach him a lesson. Figure out sleep time. Get some speakers, set timer to play loud annoying music during his bedtime :) Keep below legal limit. LOL

You guys are all cracking me up! :p I haven't heard anything in two days (a record!). I think his gf might have said, um she has a point and they're chilling it out. I did think of recording of all of the noises at some point and then playing it back, three feet from their driveway, at the same volume. Let them listen to engines being revved for an hour and see how it feels.

But, as I said, it's been quiet for two days, so here's crossing my fingers.

Happy for you! Doesn't even 2 days make such a difference???

Yea gf might have step-in since it's her place, and not his. If it starts again next time might be best to talk to her, or leave her a note.

Left note with one upstairs neighbor couple years back, work for me (was in apartment building.) Didn't know who they where (so didn't want to approach - never know who you are dealing with in that city.) But a nice polite note worked that I was "tired of being woken-up at 2am."

LOL I needed a good laugh :)

Or maybe just pull sounds from movies like ChainSaw massacre ;)

Some if the replies here are making me laugh! I kinda wonder how some noise might cause me into the Incredible Hulk and start smashing:)! Many different sounds can set me into a full fledge panic attack and I want to get my revenge on the culprit.

I'm extremely sensitive to noise. The car blinker causes anger. Any kind of music. What may be funny is that meditation music or chants or anything that has to do with calming or "spiritual " grounding techniques will literally want to smash my head against the wall. When I used to go get massages, the soft, relaxing music makes me go crazy and I have to ask if she could turn it off.

I moved into this four plex over a year ago and it was so and still is bad. Mine is the upstairs one and then there's the family underneath me and the same on the other side. I have lived in many apartments but I can't believe this place hasn't been burned down by past residents. I can hear every word the family says underneath me. I hear them open and close their cupboards. I hear the dad cough. When I'm in the shower, I can hear the father downstairs singing in the shower and also the neighbors on the other side of the wall taking a shower too. I laughed so hard at this one because we were all taking a shower all together:) I would tiptoe throughout my place and not flush the toilet for a bit so they don't know I was in the bathroom. Basically it's me and three families living together.

There was a family underneath me who had a 4 year old girl who screamed louder than I thought was possible to come out of such a little body. I don't know what was up with the mom letting her do that all the time and then when she was in her room screaming she would bang her headboard so loud on the wall.

My dad and his wife rent this place out and had no idea how aweful it was until I recorded the screaming and had my dad listen and he would text the husband to call the wife to tell her to shut the kid up! And it would stop for awhile and back up again. Lots of complaints and texts to my dad that I'm seriously going to murder her if she doesn't stop!

Every small noise I could hear from them would cause the worst panic attacks and the only way I could handle it was to turn on a movie so loud to "get back at them." At least it helped just for a second to think that. I also have Pink in concert so I turn tv way up loud and put a cd in a player in the bedroom above where the monster was and turned it up so loud. But no matter what I could hear her and the music made me even crazier.

Thank goodness they moved a couple weeks ago . Even though I can hear the couple talking downstairs sometimes it is still heaven compared to that hell. But now I can't hear a child playing without me losing my mind. One little cry from any baby or child in a grocery store or anywhere about kills me. A knock on the door is something that causes alot of distress. I Find that every sound is dangerous to me and the anger or rage or panic... Whatever it is, I need to figure out ways to

@torietoo Your not the only one who finds "calming" noises to be a massive irritation.

For example I can't tolerate:
- Birds
- Trickling water
- Whales song (not to be confused with Welsh singers, though sometimes...)
- Ticking sounds (clock)
- buzzing, ticking or rattling (such as a fan bearing that is wearing out.)

I had a neighbour who used to take 4 hours a week to weed whack his yard. 4 hours of Buuuzzz pause, buzzz pause, buzz pause. Then he would stop just long enough to make you think he was finished. Then buzzz pause.:banghead:

Why do we have to be nice to our neighbours again? Lol.
