New Here
Hi guys, I'm new here. Had a brief look over the forums and they seem to be helpful so signed up from over here in sunny Scotland!

I'm having a little bit of trouble after a car accident. It seems to pale in comparison to some of the thing I've read on here though. Last December, I was the front car in a 5-car pile up in rush hour traffic on the motorway. Since then, I've had major trouble sleeping with nightmares, terrors and insomnia. Also struggle with flashbacks, anxiety when driving and moreso as a passenger.

I have an appointment with a psychiatrist on Tuesday after being referred with "significant ongoing psychological issues". Just really don't want to be seen as a mental case.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to being here and reading the advice. Hopefully sharing with people in a similar state will help.

All the best,
Rusty.

Hey, just wanted to say welcome, and you made me laugh, your Scottish accent really comes through even in text. I'm so sorry to hear about your car accident. I think it's silly to try to compare your pain to someone else's... you're suffering. I'm just so sorry you're suffering. Anyways, it looks like you're doing good things, seeing a psychiatrist, looking around on here, reaching out for help. So just hang in there. Oh, and I'm wee newbie, too (Irish one, though, from America), so I don't feel like I can give you much advice, but there are many people on the forum who will. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

Rusty, have you seen the wee folk? What do they have to say? I want to go to Ireland and Scotland and see them and the fairies, etc.

That said, Welcome!!

Doesn't matter how a person gets the PTSD. Once they've got it, it kicks in even if a person doesn't think they should've gotten it.

Hi Rusty,

Welcome to MyPTSD forum! :)

Trauma is trauma and no one knows why one person develops PTSD and another does not. The important thing is to get a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan that will help a person minimize the impact of PTSD. You are doing the right thing by acknowledging something is wrong and seeking help.

This forum is a great place for information and support as you work on healing.

Wishing you the best.

Debbie

Welcome to the forum, Rusty.

There's a few Scots around here, including wee me, and the UK is the second largest demographic of users on this forum (I'm sure Anthony pointed that out on a thread). So you're not alone locally, or globally, in dealing with "significant ongoing psychological issues" (the latest terminology General Practitioner doctors seem to like using these days). No one will think you're a mental case here either.

I hope you get on fine at the Psychiatrist.

Hi Rusty and welcome from another inhabitant of the Bonnie Country!

My therapist said to me last week that doctors should not ask you 'what is the matter with you?' but 'What happened to you?'. So many people suffer psychological distress from a traumatic incident in their lives. You are not a 'mental case'. You deserve help to recover your state of equilibrium.

I am sure your appointment with the psychiatrist will go well. He might even recommend EMDR or Brainspotting - some areas of Scotland are at the forefront of these new therapies and they can be very helpful.

Best wishes
Lucy x
