I believe that what he has seen and done in various wars so disgusts him that he is terrified of telling anyone else - most of all me. He is frightened that I will be disgusted too. He lets little snippets slip when he is drunk, but talks about it very little. I sometimes feel that if I could drill a hole in his skull, bucket loads of pus and bile would pour out. I understand why he is the way he is and I try to support him. However, I do get very tired. I gave him the website for the combat veterans support forum but he hasn't accessed it.

You are doing all you can do. Your description is so apt, if they haven't sought help. All that they have said and done just festers away like a boil.

You have to look after yourself. What about therapy for you? Not sure if there is AA or something similar in your neck of the woods, here we have Al Anon for families of alcoholics. Read everything you can in these forums, I think I know more now about PTSD than my guy ever will, but it gives me the tools and the fortitude to continue on in as healthy a manner as I can, for the moment.

Sometimes the sufferers have to hit rock bottom before they seek out help. You have to decide how much of your life you are willing to put on hold. However, you do say he is improving very slowly, that is a positive, but untreated, are the small improvements going to last? He has suffered so much, and you along with him.

I will pray that he finds the strength and the humility to seek help. Bless you for all you are doing, and him for the inconceivable pain he is bearing.

War is disgusting... I know. If you do nothing at all yourself, the things you will see are enough to change you forever. You watch someone rape someone, or slit their throat, put a bullet through their head, and your rules of engagement state you can't intervene, because you're not police and they aren't wearing a military uniform... thus it would be the solider going to jail if they intervened. Helplessness can at times be a very bad thing in war... you have a rifle, ammunition, and no power to change some things, but it's ok to kill this person over here, or someone who points a weapon at you and threatens your life. But if they aren't threatening you... keep on walking.

War is frustrating.
