Another Shot At Law

I don't really know what it is I'm after in terms of responses, but I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed (okay, in tears) - I just received confirmation from the Law Society that even though I have practiced in (urgh!) 6 years, I can still apply for a new practicing certificate. No special catch-up study or anything required.

I feel like someone just sent me an email confirming that even though my world has gone to hell for years, there's still a chance for me to get back into life, and even go back to a job where I could feel like I was making a difference to people's lives.

Of course, I'd have to find a firm willing to employ someone who's been a complete mess for years, part time, with no current experience...sigh!

But still, it's a kind of hope. That's something.

We can still come back from hell, right? People do make it through to the other side of this? No idea how, but it's got to be possible...

f*ck yes, go @Ragdoll Circus go!

Look - you have been working so, so hard. And I am sure it often doesn't feel like much is changing. But I think more is changing than you probably realize - and I (personally) see a lot of growth, and a whole lot of courage. Plus you are wicked smart - that's always been quite evident.

I'm very excited for you. And yes, there is a way out of hell. One step at a time, you know? So, here's just another step. Big, big support coming your way :)

Go for it Ragdoll !!! This is the other side of hell.... or at least a step away from it.... you didn't get this far without there being some payoffs... and someone will take a chance with you.... as Joey said.... you are smart and brave.... pretty much what it takes to do any job.... I am so excited for you.... still setting quietly with you.... but hoping a new wardrobe is in order... I'll help you hang them up....
woot woot..... get on this train girl... it's going to take you to some wonderful new places..... 'L' you bigger than the sky !!!!

I would think some firms would see you as an asset for having gone to hell and back. I'm sure there are some jerks out there who'd see it as a dealbreaker, but I suspect if you are open and honest you will find a firm to give you a shot. If you've practiced at all, you have an advantage over just-out-of-school youngsters with no experience.

Hell, I think it would be really empowering just to be able to be open about things, to say, "Look, I may have been off the radar for a while but I know damn well that I'm good at this and worth your time, because if I wasn't I wouldn't be putting myself out there like this." (Ok, you wouldn't use those words, but something like that. You know what I mean. It will be nice to go back into that world and hold your chin up high. Dare them to hold the last six years against you)

<grin> Yes.

I have a good friend who used her (formerly very serious international law degree) to work in the film industry for awhile. As they needed lawyers to be filming internationally. It was exactly the break she needed, stepping away from diplomacy & genocide, & spending a couple years with artists, before then going back to human rights. I have another friend who gave both middle fingers to Cypress & went & worked for a sports team, for awhile. Same sort of thing. Pallet cleanser? Needed. There's also the pro bono track, and a few dozen other avenues in; where people couldn't care less what you've been doing (or not), just happy that you're willing to be doing, with them. Use some of those for awhile to build up that whole "So what have you been doing?" question with an answer you feel solid about using :) Not so insurmountable, anymore, right?

Congratulations. :D
