Anti-depressants Prescribed For Sleep

Status

So, I sleep a maximum of 2-3 hours a night, if I'm lucky, due to all the nightmares, flashbacks, and anxiety, etc. My doctor is considering putting me on a low dose anti-depressants for sleep because she doesn't want to give me sleeping medications due to my younger age.

Have any of you had anti-depressants for sleep? If so, how did it work for you?

I know my dad takes Trazadone, and he says it works better than anything else. After a recent hospitalization, he was given Ambien, and it was unsuccessful. So, it works for him. But he doesn't have PTSD, and I'm wondering if it's helped any of you.

And, Mods, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section. It is about sleep, so I put it here. versus in Medications forum. Sorry if I made the wrong decision.

Hi Ashley, my gp prescribed Amitryptyline to help with my sleep, its an antidepressant but at a lower dose it helps me sleep through the night. I don't take it every night, usually take for a week at a time to help reset my body clock when my sleep is very disturbed

SSRIs or selective serotonoin reuptake inhibitors that are used in treating depression can also help in suppressing REM sleep and reducing the symptoms of cataplexy.

I am taking Amitryptilin too... 50g. I think it is okay and the amount can be varied, which is useful. I think I would like to stop taking it for a while, but haven't had the courage to do that yet. Some of these meds make nightmares strongers like Doxepin. I was taking that but the doctors took me off of it because they said it might be causing me my nightmares. But with Amitryptilin I barely remember my dreams.
