Yep, did Gulf 1. Being out on left flank recce didn't do any of that NBC crap, thank f*#k. AND I had an SLR!

..........Also did Granby...........

We still allowed to call it that?

Do we not have to use some fab bada doozey American Operational name.

I remember telling some one ages ago while in blighty "Yeah was Op Granby"
"Op What? never heard of it"
"Gulf 91"
"Oh you mean Desert Storm"
"No I mean Op Granby!"

And the guy was a Brit FFS

SLR :ROFLMAO: you must of pissed someone off Ned cocker. I had an SMG :p

Mate, at least I didn't have an SA80, so it would've gone bang if needed.

I was reading a report on the operational success and sustainability of the SA80 for the British Forces, especialy since Afghan.

Seeing as it has been reported that its realy only effective upto 300 mtrs, and anything beyond that is well.....to put it bluntly..... pretty safe.

I am glad I had an SMG, you could allmost thrown the thing further than the SA80 shoots effectively :D

But was an intresting read none the less, I`ll see if I can find it again

We worked with a lot of British soldiers. At the time I thought the sa80 was cool and superior to our m16. It had optics, compact and had
a better ergonomic balance and feel. I was a little jellous. Now I have heard they are less reliable than the m4 but I did not know about accuracy problems. I assume that that is why you quote a 300 m effective range. I have also heard British ammo is less reliable and consistent as american ammo.

Dispite its teething problems the Bullpup is in theory a damn good weapon.

If memory serves me right the first version was in the mid or late 40`s and chambered the .303 the enfield used. but was bolt action.

So they would probably have been better of making it a 7.62 and leaving it there. It was after all, shorter, lighter and conversion friendlier than the SLR.

But some strange country (wonder who that was  ) insisted that NATO or at least the main forces of NATO should use the same munitions.

And allthough the SLR was a bit to bulky for house calls, you could at least shoot people through them with it, and a target did fall when hit by a round from the SLR even if it just winged them.

I just hope they come up with something sensible, and not some half cocked idea of what the grunt on the ground needs.

The .223 needs to go away. No more crap about how it wounds better an all that. .308 or .303 for you wogs. We all need to go back to using effective ammo on the battlefield. .223 stops nothing and just annoys the hell out of me. The whole reason for going to the lighter ammo was it was supposed to increase accuracy and allow the individual to carry more or the ammo. Accuracy has not improved noticeably and what good is 100 extra rounds if you have to waste them all to slow down a car? or try to shoot someone who is using a wall for protection?

Agreed, Dan. And the .223 would deflect of the smallest twig. You should have been around when those things first came out. We qualified on the M-1 and then a week later they marched us back over to the range and when the Range Sgt. held up the 16 we all thought it was a joke and laughed. It's a toy, someone said.

Not so funny to be told it was the real thing. The first contractor to make it was Armalite. And there was weld slag all over it and the plastic looked like it would break first time out. We were issued one when we got to Okinawa. I banged it around the aircraft for a few months and turned it back in.

Hell if we had to bail out, we wouldn't have been able to hang onto it when the chute popped anyway. So hell with it and I wore Smith and Wesson .38 revolvers. Kept trying to score a .45 at the black markets but never did. Don't know how many times I heard, "save the last round for yourself".

My Brit friends...would you be so kind as to post small pictures of the weapons you are talking about? I know FN FAL, L1A1, do know what a bulpup is, but the rest....

Thanks,

Sarg
