Ask a foreigner

I may be geo-locating myself with this question buuuut …. How does everyone feel about pizza? Do you fold it or not? And how do you feel about dipping it in ranch dressing?
Ditto, love pizza.

- NY THIN slice
- Chicago DEEP
- Roma/West Coast USA/German hand thrown & wood fire oven (flammekuche, in DEU).

Italian/NY red+white=bliss. ((Like Latin/Mexi red+green (Christmas) =bliss)) AKA ranch dipped red sauce pizza is as good as Alfredo & bolognese topped breadsticks. ALWAYS mix the red (meaty) and white (creamy herbaceous). Unless? You’re in Chicago. Then? Add garlic butter, as white sauce is stupid fatheads. The REST of the world doesn’t add garlic butter to pizza, but cheerfully adds ranch/alfredo/etc. IF AND ONLY IF it’s a red sauce pizza. Olive oil wood fired pizza cringes against both red & white & garlic butter.

It doesn’t reeeeeeally geolocate you, as every major city in the US has NY THIN crust pizza. Only in “the city” does NOT thin crust need explaining. If it’s pizza? It’s thin crust & folding. Or? You’re talking about something other people/places call pizza…and isn’t. But is a bread casserole thing with pizza toppings, or weirdness topped with weirdness and sold/eaten by assholes. Wearing sunglasses at night.

So there’s only an 82% chance you’re from NY(C), or Upstate (NY). <<< One of my bros lives upstate in Buffalo. Don’t even get me started on his rants about wings. And how the ONLY buffalo wings, are made IN, Buffalo. Everything else is just a cheap -or douchey- imitation. Snort. I think he’s just irritated I make better ‘buffalo wings’ (capsaicin + butter; whether franks, Tabasco, etc.) than he can get at home. Dude. Deep fry & toss, or 800f pizza grill & toss. It ain’t hard. You just need the equipment & Tyson. My SIL (native buffalo) ADORES my wings. Converts (like my bro) are always more hardline. Even/especially when it’s just plain stupid to be.

OOH this does sound lovely.

I like this geographic guess and will leave it at this. Because you are correct, the deliciousness of NYC-style thin crust has permeated all major US metropols at this point (save Chicago, perhaps).

This is not what I am eating, unless you count pineapple in the weirdness category.

Guilty pleasures are doubled 😉

My very first job on the line, was throwing woodfired pizzas (600-800degrees).

But I grew up in Japan, where squid & corn count as “most popular” pizza toppings 🤮 And I’ve worked flammekuche in the DEU where “American” pizza has… hotdogs and French fries on it??? 🤮 Nope!!!

I sometimes fold my pizza, can get more from a bite.

Never had ranch dressing if I remember correctly, don't remember seeing it either and I checked every menu from fast food restaurants. I'm from Australia so not popular here.

Don't forget Detroit style.

Deep dish and layered backwards.
Dough, toppings, cheese to the edge, sauce on top.

I have never thought of folding pizza like a taco and eating it that way.
NY Pizza is soooooo thin you can’t pick it up and eat it without folding it… unless you hold it over your head, whilst toppings slide down your face (teenage boys adore this & make sport of it)… it flops down like a wet noodle from the crust. Fold it in half and it stays a fairly sturdy only slightly floppy triangle.

Reminds me of a lunch place near when I worked. They did a fantastic smoked salmon and onion pizza.

We have a bunch of good wood fired al forno places that do traditional style pizza and if you want to get it to your mouth - you gotta fold it after the first couple slices.

As for dipping? Never got why you would do that.

If you want to coat your food in something - try Poutine......
